Any plans for building new dams?

Had an interesting thought the other day as I drove through Du Toits kloof. If they build a dam towards the end of the kloof as you get closer to the turn off to Rawsonville it could save up quite a bit of water. There are no farms in that area so no land will have to be repossessed and there is good water flow most of the time, so a good catchment area.

There is a report somewhere about that valley. Don't forget the major Faultline that runs through those mountains, which affected the design of the tunnel. Seem to remember the report referring to the fault line as one of the reason why a dam with a significant capacity should not be built in this valley.

Good to know. Pity though cause that would have been an ideal spot for a storage dam.

The Clanwilliam Dam is meant to be extended up by 6m , Everytime I drive past the current wall I glance up at the marker above the wall to indicate the 6m. Still wondering if we will ever see it full again...

Last I heard, the project is due to start up again or should have already started. The budget issues are supposed to have been sorted out.

Clanwilliam hit 50% today, an incredible achievement when about a month ago, it was under 10%.

Real-time DWA Clanwilliam Dam graph: http://www.dwa.gov.za/hydrology/Unverified/DetailStageFlow.aspx?Station=E1R002FW&Type=Flow

From 25% on 16 Jun to 50% on 21 Jun is absolutely incredible!

This is stunning as i drove past it about a month back and I get to drive past again next Sunday...... driving 780km just to catch a plane at the airport, an hour after I drop one person another arrives for collection back to Namibia..... the joys of parenthood...

Back to the dam...

They just recently upgraded the N7 around the dam and have built the new road further back from the dam and up a hill, with a flyover that goes over the floodplain on the western part of the dam, I often wondered if it was a waste of money, but if that dam fills 40% in a month I might be wrong...... :D

In preparation for the raising of the wall

Yep! But the area 6m above the current high level mark spreads out quite dramatically, so I reckon it will be quite a challenge to ever see that dam reach 100% ..... need a biblical type flood! ;)

We shot a documentary on the building of that bridge and the expansion of the dam in 2015.

12.5mm rain up to 4.30pm in Kenilworth (near the mountain). Much less elsewhere, though some likely over the catchment areas.

Edit: The SAEON Dwarsberg mountain catchment site (Jonkershoek) recorded 19mm up to midnight.

Is it available anywhere? Would love to view it if at all possible.

It was for Haw & Ingles, the construction company responsible for the project - As far as I know the video was never made public unfortunately.

So got sent this on one of my Whatsapp groups today. Gordon_R, you're our resident meteorological maestro, is there any merit to this FB post*

Mix of truth, hype and distortion. I can't see the details on the image, but it looks a bit like a storm predicted for Sat 30th, though forecasts will likely change before then. Nothing much predicted for Mon 25th, so that's fake...

Deeps lows do occur in winter, but they don't necessarily mean anything (except to surfers), since the center of the low is far offshore...

When something real does develop, I will be sure to post it here!

Well that's what I thought since my (admittedly limited) weather apps show a fairly mild day on Monday & Tuesday, with a 60% chance of rain on Wednesday.

/and then all my friends bitch at me for not being on Facebook. I wonder why!

It's a real post, made on 16th June (7 days ago!) Any model run that far in advance will show 'interesting' outcomes, which never actually develop...

Edit: As far as swells go, it has been a busy week for surfers:
