The major Cape Town dam levels have risen by 1.9% since Monday, with good inflow yesterday (Thurs 14th). See: http://www.capetown.gov.za/Family a...and-sanitation-services/this-weeks-dam-levels

The SAEON Dwarsberg mountain catchment recorded 81.5mm up to midnight on Thurs 14th.

The SAWS reports a few impressive rainfall figures for the 24 hours to 8am on Fri 15th: http://www.weathersa.co.za/media/data/climate/nr_daily_rai.pdf

Highest include Ceres (mountain) 94mm, Jonkershoek 73mm, Paarl 36mm, Strand 36mm, Wellington 32mm, Malmesbury 29mm, etc. Also of interest was Nieuwoudtville (NC) with 30mm. Should be some good Spring flowers this year...

Other areas, particularly those away from the mountains, got much less rain. Kirstenbosch only recorded 17mm, which is remarkably low. Where I live in Kenilworth we recorded about 30mm.

As much as I like the rain I hope the weather improves by tomorrow morning as I need to drive to Oudtshoorn, leaving at 4am.

The weather should clear somewhat overnight, but there may be lingering showers along the coastal areas. Just drive appropriately...

The next significant cold-front is likely to arrive late on Sun 17th. Further rain is also likely during next week.

A proper winter, for a change...

Thanks. We really did get a lot of water. Got stuck with the caddy on my lawn late last night, had to get a tractor in to get me out.

This is indeed good news, there were a few articles in various papers about the dire straits that the farming community and the town of Niewoudtville found themselves in due to the drought.

Anyone else still feel the winter coldness is not as bitterly cold as it was in the past, or is this just my age catching up with hot flushes? :D

The front that will reach CT on the 17th looks even more promising. May linger a bit longer and thus dump even more rain over the western cape catchment areas.

30mm is not a lot of rain, but if you've had none all year, it must feel like a bonus!

This front has not produced significant lower temperatures, at least in coastal areas. Persistent onshore westerly winds, and overcast skies, means it doesnt get cold at night.

Still plenty of winter time to come, we haven't reached the solstice yet...

Recent forecasts for Sun 17th show about half the rain compared to Thurs 14th.

Quite a complex system with 3 fronts following each other within a few hours. Really can't understand why SAWS is so slow in publishing Synoptic charts and updates on their website. Us ordinary ones with no special privileges have to put up with charts that can be 12 and even 18 hours old at times.
According the current chart available, the first front is now shown as a simple low pressure area just off shore followed by the next two fronts within a few hours. The rainy period forecast has been extended to be Sunday, Monday and Tuesday

Was showing friend (who I had thought was fairly bright) the rainfall/snow map on "Windy" app. She looks at this, and asked, "Why cannot you move the cold front up a bit?" She is pushing on the screen with her finger

I said it would be easier to move Africa a bit closer to Antarctica

She'd better be hot then.....
