Funny how they got a 'massive storm' from the weather services report;

Good morning. Your morning satellite image (26 July 2018). Fine weather persists over much of RSA with partly cloudy conditions along the south coast and adjacent interior. A cut-off low pressure system will bring scattered showers and possible thundershowers to the WC tom.

Yup saw the various weather reports. But I could not see where they got their forecasts from. Even the cut off low looked to me like it would dissipate very quickly. There was some rain around Brackenfell in the Early hours, just enough to move the dirt around on my 4x4. The rain gauge I put up last time I was here appears to have been redistributed.....
The clouds are just going to screw up viewing the Lunar Eclipse.

Seems quite hit or miss if we'll get to see the eclipse, at least the window for viewing is quite long so we may be in luck.

Confirming what we feared: https://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/cape-towns-july-rainfall-way-below-average-20180730

Rainfall in Cape Town's water catchment areas was way below average during July, with one weather station recording less than a third of the normal July rainfall.

Rainfall in the Jonkershoek mountains, between the Berg River and Theewaterskloof dams, was 170mm for July, compared to the long-term July average of 535mm.

Experts say what happens in August and September will determine the extent to which Cape Town and surrounding areas will be able to recover from the three-year drought.

The average level of Cape Town's supply dams is 56.8% of storage capacity, an increase of 0.4% from last week.

Woke up to sound of rain at 3am this morning! Surprisingly unfamiliar after a very dry July...

The outlook for the next few days is modest rain, with sharply lower temperatures, compared to the relative heatwave (mostly short sleeves weather recently). See: http://www.yr.no/place/South_Africa/Western_Cape/Cape_Town/long.html

Edit: Wow, 16.5mm overnight in Kenilworth!

SAEON Dwarsberg website not responding, but should be good falls over the mountains.

Edit: Probably too soon to see any inflow into the dams, since soil moisture will be very low after July's dry spell. See Berg River time chart: http://www.dwa.gov.za/hydrology/Unverified/DetailStageFlow.aspx?Station=G1R004FW&Type=Flow&Rain=N

Rained hard in Brackenfell as well. Woke us all up.
Timing the duration and making an educated guess at the rate suggest at least 15mm or more.

Unlikely. Rainfall rates are hard to estimate...

SAWS rainfall figures to 8am on Wed 1st are rather modest: http://www.weathersa.co.za/media/data/climate/nr_daily_rai.pdf

Other than Kirstenbosch with 14mm, its all low single digits (3-5mm)...

The SAWS rainfall numbers for July are equally disappointing (not surprising though). See: http://www.weathersa.co.za//media/data/climate/nr_month_rai.pdf

Other than good falls in the Northern Cape (from an upper trough), the values in the Western Cape were mostly 50% of the long-term average...

For example, Kirstenbosch recorded 121mm, which is 49% of the 249mm long-term average.
