The Fish River came down in flood and all us Namibians were in our element. The Manager at the time was a friend of mine Sakkie Rothmann and he stood on the stone wall and gave an impromptu lecture on flooding in the NAMIB, all about the rock types not absorbing the water, really interesting, we lapped up every word, appreciating the special moment... The foreigners did not appreciate the sudden aquatic onslaught and all went into bitch mode, demanding their money back and wanting to leave...

Storming in the Garden Route, have had some good rains and continuing. Various mudslides on the N2 surrounding Knysna because the recent fires burnt away all the vegetation supposed to keep the ground in check.

The Italians are busy building a massive dam further up this river that will be the largest in Namibia and one of the largest in Southern Africa.... Only the lower reaches, last 140km's , not too much agriculture along this section, most of it is east of the Fish River confluence....

They reckon the agricultural benefits of the new dam will be massive, in the desert, kind of like the Hoover Dam,
 
A well developed cold-front will make landfall over the SW-Cape (only) later tomorrow (Mon 20th into Tues 21st). This will bring significant amounts of rain (20-40mm in places, always more over the mountains).

Cold conditions will prevail (snow over the W-Cape mountains), and extend eastwards towards KZN (but minimal rain elsewhere).

If the runoff in the catchment areas is as much as predicted, this would postpone Day Zero for the dam levels by another week or two (as well as providing some relief for gardens and agriculture).

I see another cut off low is busy forming. Combined with the front moving in from the south could lead to more rain in the southern parts of the country.

You don't perhaps have the expected rains for Stellenbosch over the next week or so? We are starting roof repairs this morning and now it's overcast, so it's probably going to rain.

Its going to rain until about Wednesday. Quite heavy as well. Postpone your roof work for a few days. OR

Will see how this goes. Should have expected rain today, this date has been booked weeks in advance.

Thanks to this, I cleared out some water from our Jojos, because they were completely full. Didn't use the water, just moved the top 5% from the tanks to other tanks so that they can fill up again when it rains tonight/this afternoon.

As I indicated in the water restrictions thread, winter rainfall in Cape Town is the "wrong" season, and you can never have enough tanks to store water through the dry summer...

Some rain last night, good falls over the catchment areas. Mostly dry during the daytime around CT, but showers inland.

Some nice showers over CT this evening, with small hail, and sporadic thunder & lightning.

Very cold, light snow quite possible.
 
Massively loud thunder in Brackenfell for a few minutes with rain + hail hopefully car survived outside without dents/scratches but hail looked fairly small
 
Massive squall just passed over Blouberg now. As quickly as it arrived, it moved on.

:D Diito. I went to see if the sunroof of my Pug survived the hail. Granted, this is not up country hail so it should be OK.
