Rain and storm for Cpt

There is a place about 200km north of the border in Namibia called AUS, it is on the edge of the Namib and is known for the odd snowfall.... fascinating to see the photographs of these snowfalls in the desert in a local hotel up there... Bahnhof hotel I think...

Note that all of these predictions are fickle, since a 1C difference in temperature means a 150m change in the freezing-level.

Note that less snow is predicted over the Drakensberg in recent forecasts.

Edit: There are some differences between the two charts, even though both are based on identical data. The snow-forecast database has much more detailed topographic elevations, but applies a minimum threshold of 1mm rain (1cm snow), so that the ground coverage of the two charts appears different.

That little isolated blue dot amidst the green Island north of the main snow areas is the Kurumanhills range! Exactly where we had the snow storm in the Kalahari!

I remember those photos but not the name of the hotel. The barman at the time could not tell us much about them though.

"Heavy rain leading to localised flooding is expected over the West Coast District, Cape Winelands, Cape Metropole and western parts of the Overberg District from Sunday, persisting into Monday," it said.

"Gale force north-westerly winds of 70km/h are expected between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas in the morning."

A watch was issued for disruptive snowfalls in places over the high-ground and mountainous areas of southern Namakwa, the West Coast District and Cape Winelands overnight into Monday morning.

The SA Weather Service also pointed out special weather advisories.

"Strong interior winds are expected over southern Namakwa and the interior of the Western Cape on Sunday afternoon."

It said an intense cold front is expected over the Western Cape and southern Northern Cape on Sunday into Monday, spreading to the Eastern Cape, Free State and North-West on Monday.

"The public and small stock farmers are advised that snowfalls on the high-grounds, very cold and wet conditions and strong to gale force winds can be expected."

It added that cold conditions with severe frost are expected in places over the eastern parts of the Northern Cape, Western and central parts of the North-West and Free State on Tuesday, spreading to southern Gauteng, highveld of Mpumalanga and western KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.

I just drove from Milnerton to our office in town. It isn't that bad.
 
Golf has been called off so I get to lie on the couch the whole day watching MotoGP and F1 and listening to the rain. Bliss!
 
Surprisingly the southern suburbs is much tamer than blouberg side
I had to make 3 u-turns at flooded roads.
Now back to blouberg I go
 
24mm in Kenilworth in 2 hours! Edit: A bit drier since 10am.

Edit: Total on SAEON Dwarsberg (Jonkershoek mountain catchment) about 50mm from midnight up to 11am.

You are the parent. You dictate. It's crazy to go out today. No freaking way. You are putting your kids and yourself at risk.
 
Hopefully this heavy rain within a relatively short period will trigger some good runoff into the dams

She went there yesterday, slept over....friends are going away at lunch time. Should I have told her to book into a B&B from today?
I must be a terrible parent "risking our lives" like I've just done *rollseyes*.

Anyway, we're home safe and sound, fire is going to be lit and a pot of butter chicken is about to start.
