Don't panic, it is predicted, and IMO is consistenty with a severe cold front and snow: http://ewn.co.za/2018/07/01/hail-and-thunder-could-hit-cape-town-on-sunday-night

The SA Weather Service is alerting Cape Town residents of a possibility of hail and thunder on Sunday night.

A cold front moved into the Western Cape on Sunday, bringing with it heavy rain in Cape Town.

Roads across the City of Cape Town were flooded, leaving residents of some informal settlements trapped in their homes.

The Weather Service said in a statement showers are expected to remain over the Western Cape on 2 July, while spreading into the Eastern Cape and southern Northern Cape.

Snow is also expected over much of the high-lying areas of the Western Cape.

The cold front is expected to exit the country on 3 July.

Edit: I saw a flash oif lightning in the direction of Table Bay (from Kenilworth) at 9.15pm.

Edit: The temperature on the SAEON Dwarsberg mountain station (1200m elevation) has just dropped to 0C, and it is currently raining, so snow is likely to already be falling!

Hail in Constantia.

There's actually a big tree on Brommersvlei Road which is half blocking the road near the nursery. Quite dangerous and been there since Saturday.

Did the URL for the SAEON Dwarsberg station change or something? It stopped working for me about a week ago, just times out.

There are lots of issues for many of us. I will be taking it up with insiders on Monday. There is some or other IT idiot somewhere in SAEON/NRF that has no idea what he/she is doing!

See my PM message to you. Please replay as the more ammo I have for Monday the better.

I use a different URL for SAEON Dwarsberg, which works fine on my PC/browser combination.

P.S. I will not publish the URL (you can search for it easily), since the site is not designed to handle mass traffic.

SAEON Dwarsberg recorded 82.5mm on Sunday 1st (up to midnight), plus all the rain on Friday (61mm) and Saturday (32mm), and still raining this morning...

Temperature on top (1200m elevation) is -1C, snow likely!

Edit: Snow visible on the Sutherland webcams! https://www.saao.ac.za/webcams/saltcam/current.jpg

Berg River Dam up 4.7% in 24 hours to midnight (to 77.6%). Still rising sharply: http://www.dwa.gov.za/hydrology/Unverified/DetailStageFlow.aspx?Station=G1R004FW&Type=Flow&Rain=N

Edit: When the Berg River Dam is full, the excess water can be pumped to Theewaterskloof: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Cape_Water_Supply_System

Edit: Extremely cold daytime temperatures will be experienced today:

cheers for the updates! At what % does the Berg start to drain/lose water - if/when it does, can it direct it to other dams etc?

Lightning and hail was bad this morning in Bellville on my way to work, lightning hit within a few meters from my car and the thunder was deafening... Haven't experienced something like this ever before, had to go clean myself up when I got to work, LOL :D
