Rain asks Telkom board to consider merger proposal

Merger is not going to go through due to the spectrum, which is one of the main reasons to want Rain in the first place.

I cannot stand the thought of potentially connecting to a rain tower. I can already see the call immediately dropping and my phone bricking itself out of retaliation for connecting it to such a **** network.

Please Telkom, do the right thing and tell rain to go **** themselves.

And this is what I don't understand about these articles.

TKG is the holding company. It holds Telkom Mobile, Telkom ISP, Openserve, Gyro (builds towers), BCX, etc. All of these are separate companies. Please get this right, MyBB.

rain wants to join forces with TM only.

In my opinion, this is a good move for both companies. Anything to compete against the MTN-Vodacom cartel. rain is useless on it's own, but it's got quite a large number of 5G base stations already in operation which Telkom Mobile needs. Telkom Mobile is more consistent in terms of service delivery.
They are the same company but separate divisions. Which makes this even more perplexing as everyone is vying for a piece of Telkom as if it is dead and being dismembered. A merger with Rain makes more sense than MTN simply buying up the assets of the competition.

Yes and no.

Openserve became a separate legal entity in 2019. The consumer division still comprises of the Mobile and ISP arms, but that is bound to change.

MTN wants Openserve, but I don't see they have a snowball's chance in hell with the Competition Commission.

Telkom Mobile + rain is a much better strategic move than either of them on their own against Vodacom and MTN. Forget Cell C, they've given up already.

Assuming Rain + Telkom Mobile goes through, here's what I see.

In congested Rain areas, Telkom would become useless, but overall ease a little for Rain users.

All other areas with Rain 5G, we might start seeing Telkom 5G. Overall good except for the congested areas.

Also, MTN can suck a duck on Openserve. It actually works and is super stable. No need to change that or hike prices...

Does Telkom not have more spectrum than rain
Generally, yes, generally also in more desirable bands. Doesn't matter that much though in this argument as it would mean Telkom has substantially more spectrum than Vodacom and MTN which would be a major competitive advantage as it would mean you could use way fewer towers for the same standard of service in more crowded areas/cities.

Yet Telkom has had this advantage since they started as 8ta, it’s an advantage but they need customers and capital, they don’t even have 5G or even a plan for 5G
They wasted their advantage
Time to sell up before it’s too late

I have Rain. Good speed (don't jinx me pls).

But I hate telkom ... don't want them mixing with Rain. Telkom will taint everything...

No, they don't have that much more spectrum than the other two, Telkom also gets spectrum that is stuff like sea rescue, etc. That is not for mobile.

Where your spectrum bands is is also important, higher frequencies are better for faster data rates but have worse penetration/range.

Also pretty sure Telkom has 5G support in select areas, same as the other operators.

Telkom has the most spectrum prior to the auction and I think they still have the lions share compared to the other 3 mobile sp
From what I’ve read, I don’t think they have 5G or have any intention of launching 5G on their network, the network they might not even own at the moment
