Rain High Ping

This ping and general network instability are getting unbearable. I just opened a ticket - if it's not fixed in a few weeks I will be moving to fiber.

The issue I currently have with Rain is the lack of transparency. If you are experiencing network issues inform your subscribers of it and provide and ETA for resolution. It seems that issues only get acknowledged once forums like mybroadband highlight the issue. @ Cavedog & 11Snowman11 thanks for providing the stats on your 5G connections. As Cavedog mentioned this is not an isolated issue but one that effects all users on Rains network. @Rain you guys seriously need to get your house in order.

All the mobile networks are like this

Why not on fibre already? I'd be on fibre at the first chance.

yeah definitely same, but from what I gather around a lot of people's experiences on mybb, fibre in certain areas seems to behave worse than ADSL or not up to par with 4G when it comes to streaming. So a lot of people either go the 5G route or similar first, then fibre with a backup or worst case scenario, VDSL with 4G backup, but I'd like to hear their reason why too.

Well for me Rain speak speeds exceeds the max line speed I can get on fibre.

The 200Mbps Openserve fibre line is stable though can always max it. The Rain 5G premium service is nice for burst downloads like 40-45MB/s download speeds.

I have always got what I subscribed to, consistently and reliably.
ADSL 2,4 Mbps; fibre 5/2 converted to 10/2, 10/5, 10/10 consistently being no problems. If I compare that with mobile, the results are all over the place.
Latency up and down between 20 to 200 ms, jitter from 5 to 50, and endless dropouts.

Morning Guys,

Update

I have checked my 5G ping last night and this morning, it seems to be back to Pings between 10ms and 15ms. I have not had any correspondence from Rain. So i cannot confirm if this is due to changes which they made on there own accord without notification. Please can you guys have a look at your Ping and update on this platform.

Thanks

Update,

Recieved response from Rain Rep. They have recieved my info and will be looking into it. I responded saying that my issue is not an isolated one but their network engineers need to look into the issue as many members on the forum have responded confirming the issue.

Thanks again guys, hopefully this can be resolved for all of us.

Looks like their routing issue is sorted.

True but it's a fibre cable directly into your house. Connected to a pc via cable again. Compare that with Rain 5G. I get between 150-350Mbps and my closest tower is ~900m away. That is 900m of wireless and the router is indoors at a window so if I mount it properly could probably improve a lot.

Now let's talk price.

Rain uncapped 5G (150-350Mbps) R999.
Afrihost 200/100Mbps fibre R1497.

I would need a 200Mbps line + a 100Mbps line to get to the Rain 5G peak speed. The fibre is more stable and consistent no doubt it's not even in question because it's wired vs wireless. The total on fibre will be around R1497 + R1117 200+100Mbps so roughly R2614 for fibre on Openserve to match the speak speed of Rain.

Even with all their downs the value that the R999 Rain 5G premium offers is pretty good especially if you compare it the more expensive fibre networks. Frogfoot and Vumatel 1Gbps kicks Rain out of the park in value for money, speed and price though.

If you don't have the R1749 for Vumatel install then this is a great option. If you don't have fibre Rain 5G pretty much kicks LTE, Wirelesss and ADSL's butt.

I think somebody screwed up the traffic shaping/throttling. If I ping rain.co.za without any downloads busy it is sub 100ms. If I start downloading linux mint 20 from IS ping up to 15000ms and the download times out.

For me downloads are fine torrents are full speed too and all is from international peers it's just the latency that is an issue.
