It is clear as day that Rain is oversubscribed, so just keep this in mind if you are considering signing up for their LTE product.

The difference between 10pm and 12pm on a Huawei B618:

To be fair, you guys need to add location. On rain I get 50-80Mb all day everyday. CPT. Northerns. 1800MHz forced (better jitter and upload).

Edit: as a reference, on Telkom I get anything from 40-120Mb depending on time and how many people are home using LTE.

75% signal strength in Jeffreys Bay. Connection is intermittent and unstable and support is useless. I wouldn't recommend Rain to anyone. Don't tell me you have coverage in a place and then not have coverage in a place.

The support tech says it's due to high usage. In other words, too little bandwidth and too many users. Guess that people getting frustrated with the slow speeds might solve the too many users problem for them.

The upload is better now...

Buy from poynting direct, poynting Xpol 6 antenna. From otto.co.za you buy 2 x ts9 to sma adapters. Then you are sorted. And of course pole and bracket for mounting against wall, this you can buy from ellies.

What is the average price on these antennas please?

The ever increasing dismal speeds being reported by a lot of people should be a worrying trend for Rain.

Apparently not though.
No surprise. Profit is all that matters ( and the lies that keep it coming)

There is NOTHING they can do about it. They have 2 options. Roll out more and more towers at what cost? Cancel the R250 uncapped simcard deal.

They do not have spectrum to roll out more LTE bands and already using all their available spectrum on 4G. Rolling out more tower won't happen because the money they are getting from R250 uncapped simcard users aren't enough. They can't kill the Vodacom Roaming deal because that is their biggest source of income so big that Vodacom is rolling out Rain Band 3 on every tower that Vodacom runs.

I think the slow speeds are also due to the fact that Vodacom now have access to Rain Band 3 and B38 for it's customers and in most cases where Vodacom has a tower they install Rain on the same tower giving Vodacom so much more capacity by means of roaming on the same tower.

Some scuffed set up with a B618-22d on a washing machine, LTE antenna cords running up a staircase hanging a poynting xpol 6 on burglar guards... with... a towel to secure it. The poor thing has to fight a battle between glass and wood to get any sort of direct line of sight, but it won:

In the start, we were getting around 7mbps down and 0.5 up. It was a mess, we finally messed around with positioning on the floor of a box with ADSL copper (live mind you) wire in a tiny coil on the floor. With an old Note 4 we managed to peak at around 55/15mbps. We found a B618 and then reported low speeds of around 12-22mbps and a funky upload all over the show. After letting it settle on a desk for a day (after 3 days of putting it everywhere possible) it achieved around 55mbps and 2mbps upload. More tinkering and it hit 55/20 stable most of the time.

Still going to tweak and see if we can break 100mbps for rain and maybe 25 up. I'm honestly extremely happy with rain and hope the rest of the users can tweak around as much as we did. Would love to take this setup to a friends place and see if we could post similar results.
