Rain Mobile Feedback Thread

Any gamers around that I can PM - need some info/insight/details - want to set foot in the gaming world now that data is less of a problem.

Checking in. I can do tests probably only after 6pm tonight but drop me a pm.

For the crap of it, I installed battle.net, and decided to do all the Blizzard games, 6 of them. 110gb to download. To see how long it would take, and if there is any FUP type stuff. I started at 11pm last night, my PC shut itself down just after 3am, after being Idle for 30mins.

It moves close to 40gb an hour. Steam peaks at 11meg a second.

I am well impressed.

Well good for you mate! I am only getting an average of 10Mbps. The most I get is 30Mbps. I for one am not impressed.

I suggest you test for yourself. Some of the guys in this thread are getting amazing speeds and they have good coverage, which might not be the case for you.

107GB down so far (From about 8am today) and still going strong...

What device are you using? Average speeds? Or are you one of the consultants posting under a rain tower?

Have you tried playing with the LTE band?
Even try flipping your router on it's side. I got quite a bit of an increase by laying it on it's side.

As with any new promotion or network, caution is advised. Most if not all are using this as a supplementary service. For R120 it is a good way to try it out i reckon. Don't switch until they have more people using the service.

/do PM cavedog though ;)

Yea I still have fixed LTE which is not bad - I am just testing things out but not about to make life changing decisions based on these tests.

PS I already dropped cavedog a PM

Huawei B618, 6MB/s, At home other side of Krugersdorp, and hell no not working for them, in fact Rain sucks in the evenings in my area Cell C waaay better. Coverage map places the RAIN tower about 6 blocks away from my house.

Do you have a fiber connection as well?

Nope LTE only, no Fiber in my area.

Damn. Same here. Wish I was getting your LTE speeds though. When Telkom was running their 500Gig deal I was getting 15 megs per second download speed. It was a dream come true.

Ah ohk - I think I am getting similar speeds - same router - my earlier test went up to 50Mbps which about 6.25 Mbps but average is in the 40's.

Torrents don't seem to download at a decent rate during the day but this morning I was doing my max of 3megs a second...

Which is to be expected, I'd say. They can't have everything running on full taps all the time. Some of the protocols will probably he shaped/throttled till after 11pm. Keen to see what I can get once I get my sim tomorrow. If I can get at least between 24-40mb I'd be more than happy than my current 12mb ADSL.

Which is exactly why I am running a http download test instead of P2P.

Sidenote: Good thing Vodacom is not running this service, can you just imagine OOB shark if they did. Then again I must not speak to soon, as soon as my normal RAIN is active (21st June) would love to see how/If their blocking work in a controlled environment. Me no like surprises.

6pm you will see the throttle kick in. They shape hard though as it caused some lost packets on downloads so rather schedule anything heavy after the window. Youtube and the rest work great though anytime.

The Rain rep on Twitter told me that they do have a OOB protection thingy in place so that clients don't get bitten by using too much data at R50 per GB. Their priority is also real-time services. Streaming and browsing is also high up on their list, but streaming takes second place in the hierarchy.

Anybody know if it's alright to setup a VPS as a seedbox?
