Rain Mobile Feedback Thread

Seems 4K video in youtube doesn't stream that nice. my connection speedtests show 50mbit +- most of the time.

Running chrome and going to youtube.
Search 4K video. Select any of them. Set it to 4K resolution (not just 1080p)
Right click on video, select stats for nerds.

Says there that while video streams, thinks(circle turning) and buffer going down to 0seconds
"Connection Speed 6587 Kbps" <-- it seems to go around the 6200kbps to 6700kbps tops which is 837kb per second

Which is not enough to stream or twitch 4K content. and won't netflix that either even if you wanted to.

4K streams fine on my 50mb fibre line. Must be something with Rain

4k YouTube works just fine here

It's something between 6pm and 11pm (their peak period)

I gots that uncapped story from 11pm to 6pm (non peak for R250)

and now after 11pm. 4k Streams fine.

Same video :
Connection Speed 26046 Kbps
Buffer Health 17.40 s

Ye. just after 11pm. it went back to normal.

I now get this :
Connection Speed 26046 Kbps
Buffer Health 17.40 s

Lets check tomorrow at 6pm to 11pm again (during the peak time. when they actually charge people R50 per gig.. they speedlimit it. It seems)

It won't suprise me if capped users get preference during peak hours.

Were also capped users. I woulda thunk that it would be full LTE speed during peak. Cause ur paying r50 per gig during that time. Rest of time data is unlimited and doesn't count towards ur cap?

Unless you didn't take the r250 option. Which means you use capped 24/7

But we are capped during 6pm and 11pm

Are you being billed at the moment between 6-11? If not, I don't see you as a capped user.

Noone is being billed yet, everyone is still on the unlimited days.
My point being, due to the free peak time data the network is most probably shaped in some way. I am sure once you actually pay for your data speeds will shine. Time will tell I guess.

I see they fixed the unlimited data time window :D Awesome.

So who's the snitch on myBB heh? Comeon own up, someone from Rain is lurking on here.

I'm seriously considering making this my main with my current Telkom setup as a backup. Of course we'll see later how it goes but also motivates for a dual sim phone next upgrade.

To the rain lurker, since my complaint around the free days was picked up, hows about a simple change my password on the account page? I stupidly forgot mine and can only see the account luckily because the credentials are saved on a work pc from when I ordered. And it would be nice to have a "sim login" , ie browse to the account page from the sim in question and it auto shows. With restrictions of course around increasing limits etc requiring confirmed login.

Oh there is definite shaping. Any file download protocols: ntp, steam, battlenet etc are all shaped individually during that period which is more than fair.

Ordered mine. If this works well, I will replace my Afrihost fibre. I will use Fixed rain in the peak hours, and Mobile rain in the 'offpeak' hours.

I have a similar idea, would love to know if there is a dual sim device (Not a phone) on the market?

If that fails will have to get a second device with a simple pc and PFSense firewall that route traffic on time of day.

2 x LTE routers connected to load balancer like the TP link 470 or 480 - then you can set the times for each WAN.

When you were testing, did 1080p and 1440p do just fine? Was it only 4K that was giving you issues?

Don't replace fibre with this :wtf: . There is no indication things will remain the way they are in the future to come. This is a promo and as such, it will adapt to changes once it is over. You are lucky to have fibre

Rain Fixed LTE with 60 day rollover over + fibre sounds like a plan ;) .

I know WA/Afrihost do rollover for Rain LTE, others maybe the same.

In my testing 1080p works flawlessly. No issues. Days in and speeds are still great both on MIFI and with router (B618). Everything works as expected, shaping and throttling is clearly visible in peak time but after 11pm things return to normal high speeds. I'm also contemplating sticking with this and fixed LTE (which seems to rollover now) so I can still stream netflix/other content during peak on fixed LTE as I will have data accumulated and not used up during the supposed 19hours of the day if one gets the R250 bolt-on.

Soon Rain will be all people will be talking about whether it be good or bad experience.

So it took the RAIN helpdesk 48 hours after receiving my complaint ticket to send me this form letter as a reply
Wow, their servers must be hopelessly overtaxed, not to speak of any humans working there:

a SERVICE (SIC)

Yes, my enquiry is still unresolved WTF

I also wouldn't cancel fibre for a mobile offering. Only a few people have received their sims , when everyone gets their sims then you will see how it performs.

If you cancel you will be those people complaining about how great the service was when you were the only person connected to the tower.
