Rainbow Chicken on a knife edge

So why is chicken being sold at R49.99 a kilo in Checkers ? Local...imported, dumped...whatever: we're being raped by retail.

Its not EU...think it was US or someone last time there was chat about dumping chickens.

They dump all the rubbish that their citizens don't want here. Even cars, all the good models Camry eg goes to Aus,US.. we get the Corolla with its rubbish interior.

I feel its the same with fibre, I have proven in my own building its possible to get uncapped fibre for cheaper than an ADSL connection, but yet I see products over a R1000 for something similar (but still inferior)
 
So the purveyors of terrible battery-farmed chicken are being out terrible-battery-farmed by the Chinese? Shocker.

People already eat the "rubbish" portions here because they are cheaper. You will more likely see high the nice cuts being served at more expensive resturants and shops, with the worse cuts served at cheaper places.

reference for this imports of poultry from China, this is serious news to me
 
Namibia has their own local producer, the first in the country established 5 years ago, to produce locally and to create jobs. The government afforded them infant protection status and a massive surcharge was placed on imported poultry, mainly from the RSA. In addition to this, the government also placed strict monthly quotas on imports and importers had to apply for permits and justify why they could not source the poultry locally....

Only downside, the chicken price went up, but 250 jobs were created......

A chicken is not lamb or beef: it only has 4 cuts really. It is all about the quality of the chicken. Obviously frozen chicken pieces should be avoided like the plague, as this is were the brine plays a massive role.
 
Sad to see. I am generally not in favour of protectionism as it leads to inefficient economies but I am not against anti dumping or counter dumping measures.

yeah I am also against stifling trade, but when it comes to agriculture its tricky and as a result protection is required

although in saying that, the playing field must be "fair"

so in this instance we receive no protection or subsidies whereas other countries do, so the options which exist is for them to remove the subsidies and tariffs (not going to happen because of huge lobby groups) or we introduce subsidies and tariffs

Yep...we had to lower our standards,to get the crap that was heading our way, to pass for human consumption. It was tied into the AGOA agreement...When the impact of dumping was being highlighted...many on here was of the opinion...cheap is king, and screw the local producers. Well,sub grade chickens coming home to roost.

FYI, have you seen the size of chickens at Food Lovers...turkey size!
