ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday it was unfortunate that his use of the term "boer" had caused offence.

"In my conversation with a Seshego resident, I warned of the danger of the country going backwards, and used a term that has commonly been used by black South Africans to refer to the erstwhile apartheid regime," he said in a statement.

"It is a term that continues to be understood in that way."

The Star reported on Monday that Ramaphosa had urged Limpopo residents to vote or the "boers" would take back power.

"If you don't vote, the boers will come back to control us," Ramaphosa apparently said in Seshego.

He was speaking to disgruntled resident Johanna Phala, 49, who had vowed not to vote in next year's elections because the African National Congress had disappointed her.

Agri SA on Tuesday said the politicising of "boere" had to end.

"The diverse political connotations attached to the term 'boer' is detrimental to the agricultural industry," Agri SA president Johannes Moller said in a statement.

"To equate 'boer' to Afrikaner people or a minority group or government, creates a generalised view that actual farmers [boere] represent a particular political profile."

Opposition parties criticised Ramaphosa for his comment.

Congress of the People president Mosiuoa Lekota said it showed shameful disregard for the Constitution.

The Democratic Alliance said the comment showed how much Ramaphosa was stuck in the dark ages. The Freedom Front Plus said the comment was racist.

On Tuesday, Ramaphosa said the comment was not meant to be derogatory.

"My comments were not meant to refer to a particular section of our population, and it is unfortunate if such an impression was created.

"If South Africa is indeed to move forward, all South Africans, regardless of language or background, need to work together as equal citizens," he said.

So he didn't actually explain jack about what he meant. The way it came it is the way he meant it

haha, so it's number 2 on the Excuses List today....

1) He didn't really say that.
2) You misunderstood what he said.
3) He didn't know what he was saying / momentary lapse of judgment.
4) You are racist!
5) It's apartheid's fault!
6) It never happened, the media made it up
7) Bladdy Agents.

his argument could basically be summed up as "if you don't vote, we can be conquered again."

the problem was his choice of words, aka "boer", and that what he said to the woman wasn't a valid explanation.

Ramaphosa most likely isn't a racist, people WANT him to be a racist because he is part of the ANC. the best you can get away with is that he is an idiot and on par with the republican party in america.

this mentality of "ah, but you said ..." doesn't create debates, it points and gives people excuses to cry victim

Because when you say that Boers are the bad guys, you don't really mean that Boers are the bad guys.

In the same way, if I say that you Ramaphosa is an inbred racist retard, I don't really mean that Ramaphosa is an inbred racist retard. Except he is

it's the same as saying that "things were better under whites." people can interpret it anyway they want, it may just end up being a bad choice of wording

It just shows that he seems to be uninformed about the opposition which is nowhere near anything having to do with the "boers", or apartheid for that matter. There was nothing statesmanlike in his response to the constituent. He was deliberately misinforming a voter of this country.

AAAh right.
Next time I'm accused of being a racist I'll just say they misinterpreted my statement.

You can try and make it seem less stupid as much as you want, but it's crass, exploitative, paranoid fear-mongering. He knew exactly what he was saying and to who.

You forgot to add "taken out of context" to your list...

i agree, but he didn't mean to be an "evil ANC supporter". i already addressed that with my two follow up points that were his fault

Maybe the "Boers" should "take back the power", and then keep it on.

Especially during the cold winter months.

You know STS ... sometimes I think you will literally defend anything and anyone. What I ask myself though is it because you really feel that way or is it simply to be "anders"?

Not picking a fight ... merely pointing something out .... or perhaps I am having a passive aggressive moment again :D

i was waiting for his explanation and refrained from commenting on the other threads because i thought it was being blown out of proportion. his argument was wrong and misleading, but it was unintentionally racist. it doesn't hurt to admit it wasn't intentionally racist, his argument was still stupid
