Does Dr. Ramphele know what Dr. Ramphele is doing?

Johannesburg - Confusion arose on Friday over Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele's joining the Democratic Alliance.

According to a joint statement issued by Ramphele and DA leader Helen Zille on Friday Ramphele would be welcomed into the DA at a press conference in Johannesburg on Monday.

The DA and Agang SA would next week formalise the integration of the two parties following Ramphele's decision to stand as the official opposition's presidential candidate in this year's general elections.

However, following the joint statement being issued, a message from Ramphele was uploaded onto Agang SA's website.

"You may have by now seen 'joint' statements issued by the Democratic Alliance in which it is claimed that I will be accepting DA membership on Monday," she said.

"This is not true. Nor did I agree to any such statement. It is Agang SA’s position that the technical committee must first complete its work. I am leader of Agang SA, and Agang SA will continue its work to restore the promise of our freedom."

Ramphele said the commitment she had made to Agang SA members in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Western Cape, stood.

"And I will continue to speak with all of our structures," she said.

Agang SA said on Friday, after the joint statement was issued, that the claim Ramphele would be joining the DA next week was premature.

"In fact, Dr Ramphele is on record as saying that she remains the leader of Agang SA, and that she will continue to campaign for the party," it said in a statement.

Obviously didn't think this through or they have an incredibly condescending opinion of voters who they think wouldn't question the parachuting in of a 'token' to put an acceptable 'face' on the party

This whole debacle has made me very unsure of what to do come the elections :/

No matter how much DA supporters try to spin this, it is a mess. How can you have a presidential candidate who is not even a member. As if that is not bad enough, she is still the leader of a competing party. :what: Someone help me figure this out. Imagine if this sort of thing were to happen in the ANC.

The beginning of the DANC. Time will tell.

Yes, it does seem that this whole agreement was not well organised. Shameful, really. Both the DA and Agang have handled this very badly and are showing ANC levels of disorganisation. It is almost like Ramphele is being "rented" by the DA and she will return to Agang as leader if her party obtains the necessary number of votes to have seats in Parliament.

I submit to you that ANC is way more organized than this. I mean come on. This is a shambles. I am not a DA supporter but even I cringe. Looks like she doesn't know what she wants.

Thought it was obvious. A deliberate and cynical attempt at tokenism. To put an acceptable 'black' face on the party. The hope is the masses are either shallow enough to simply vote DA because of the now 'acceptable' race of the candidate, in other words racist. Or dumb enough to believe she is there on merit based on shared principles.

Along with current DA supporters so blinded by their hatred of Zuma and anything ANC they'll accept/defend such sordid politicking under the guise of 'anything is better than Zuma"

Looks like the damaged goods is getting ready to jump back.

Even Agang which was pretty much centered around Ramphele, will be better off without her now.

Ramphele just became radio active.

Ssshhh! Dont let the DA supporters hear you. Otherwise you will be branded an ANC supporting idiot, brainless. They may even call you a drone, all because you dared call into question the DA.

Holy crap Alan.

I just find myself agreeing with you right there.

But the DA is still without doubt the better party. Just look at the WC compared to other provinces. Then again, it is not very hard to be seen in a better light than under Zuma's ANC. This 'confusion' is unlikely to sway ANC or DA voters either way. At the very best, a tiny minority of DA supporters will switch to another minority party or simply not vote at all. Just look at the ridiculous bias of News24 commenters and you'll see what I mean. No analysis at all - just everything the DA does is wonderful and everything the ANC does is rubbish.

True but that's like saying the ANC was a better party than the Nats. Note the irony those who support this are almost to a man ANC refugees. Exactly the kind of behavior their old party used to pull. Most old school DP supporters are appalled at such illiberal behavior. What's going on now under Zille makes Tony Leon's jumping into bed with the Nats seem petty and minor in comparison.

But hey 'change' is too be embraced.

Oh this untruth again. The WC has always been well run be it under the NP, ANC or DA.

How do you like the DA's liqour law? No wine for you after 6 pm. Nanny state ftl.

No...when the ANC was in power (2006-2009 I think), nothing was ever being improved and there were many, many corruption stories about Mfeketo, the ANC mayor. Do you really think we would have access to the Bus Rapid Transport System etc. if the ANC was in power? And would the ANC (if in power in the WC) be opposed to tolls in the Winelands region? No ways.

The DA are repelling that law, but yes, it was a nanny state law. No political party is perfect - and I'm not a fan of the nanny state - but it is at least better than what the ANC is offering.

So you're saying the NP did a good job?

So you're saying the NP did a good job?

How many nkandlas they build?
Any erected Etolls?
Constantly bailing out SAA?
Eskom?
< insert >

After Mandela it went to **** and it keeps on going in that direction. At this stage... anything is better than zuma even if its mamparra by the DA.

So you're saying the NP did a good job?

Not sure. Will need to look back at history to see what went on during that time. Although I do remember some nonsense with Peter Marais (changing the street name of Adderley & Wale streets) and he was a NP member if I remember correctly.
