Cape Town - Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille is expected to give Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele an ultimatum on Sunday - that she abide by their agreement or return to her party.

According to the Sunday Times, senior DA leaders met on Saturday to discuss the party’s relationship going forward with Ramphele.

This comes after the confusion that arose in the days following the media conference on Tuesday to announce Ramphele’s status as the DA’s presidential candidate.

On Friday the DA issued a joint statement to say that Ramphele and Agang SA members would be welcomed into the DA. Ramphele hit back, stating that she had not agreed to the earlier statement.

The Sunday Times reported that sparks began to fly between the two leaders even before Tuesday’s press conference. Shortly before the event, a heated telephonic discussion allegedly took place during which Ramphele said she had come up with a uniquely South African solution and that she would remain Agang leader and presidential candidate as well as the DA’s presidential candidate.

According to the DA’s constitution, a presidential candidate has to be a member of the DA in order to stand.

Johannesburg - Confusion arose on Friday over Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele's joining the Democratic Alliance.

According to a joint statement issued by Ramphele and DA leader Helen Zille on Friday Ramphele would be welcomed into the DA at a press conference in Johannesburg on Monday.

The DA and Agang SA would next week formalise the integration of the two parties following Ramphele's decision to stand as the official opposition's presidential candidate in this year's general elections.

However, following the joint statement being issued, a message from Ramphele was uploaded onto Agang SA's website.

"You may have by now seen 'joint' statements issued by the Democratic Alliance in which it is claimed that I will be accepting DA membership on Monday," she said.

"This is not true. Nor did I agree to any such statement. It is Agang SA’s position that the technical committee must first complete its work. I am leader of Agang SA, and Agang SA will continue its work to restore the promise of our freedom."

James:

A technical committee first had to find ways for both parties to use their strengths to provide a government-in-waiting for South Africa.

DA federal chair Wilmot James said Ramphele agreed to the joint statement.

"I was in a meeting this [Friday] morning with Dr Ramphele and we agreed on a statement and then issued that statement. We are not quite sure why Dr Ramphele responded in the way she did," he said.

"There is no question whatsoever that the statement issued was in fact jointly agreed to."

James said that he did not believe anything was really amiss.

"I think it is just a misunderstanding and miscommunication on their part. Our commitment and resolve to see this initiative through continues."

Andrew Gasnolar, listed as Ramphele's contact person on the joint statement, could not be reached for comment.

I would like to see the initial invitation published, also both party statements up to the decision Ramphele have to make on the ultimatum.

IMO, due to this, I would end the relationship immediately, Ramphele have shown other colours, one being the presidential candidate in the DA and Agang SA party, this is not how how things work.
 
She's just trying to keep her Agang supporters happy and not look like a sell-out. It's going to backfire. If I were the DA, I'd say thanks, but it clearly didn't work out. Who wants a double-minded person in their fold? Clearly the integrity bit is just not suiting her. Why did she even think the DA would be happy for her to stand as their presidential candidate without any sort of commitment to them? And while clearly stating that she doesn't believe in their policies.

Didn't the DA say they stand for BEE 'which created jobs, not millionaires'... ?

Rather ironic then they picked Ramphele, who is typical of the BEE that the DA apparently do not like.

Personally I would have appreciated the DA and Agang SA attending to this matter prior the structural integration and presidential candidate announcement, what we have now is denial and party member disapprovals. The sell-out debacle could have concluded without any unrest… Yes, this was discussed last year, without any answers given to the public.

Zuma and Malema also wants to keep their supporters happy, but my means in an ulterior motive. Then every leader wants their supporters voting them into power. Double-minded… hypocrites.

Yes, this didn't work out.
 
This move could potentially have been a significant milestone in SA politics. :mad:
People like myself who have been looking for alternatives to the ANC are dumbstruck by the sheer arrogance of Ramphele's "unique South African solution".



I can picture the ANC fat cats giggling at this EPIC FAIL though!

And Ramphele said that there were still squatter settlements in the WC which is why she couldn't join the DA.
 
The DA need to fire Zille now. She is destroying the party with her hubris.

She should never have gone back to Ramphele after she refused the first time. That action has made the DA look desperate and weak.
