Your Pi on the invoice was without tax.
Come customs, you have to pay 14% VAT,duties and the handling fees applicable to whatever else you might have ordered with it.
Was yours purchased via RS Components?
I am also assuming that it was normal delivery from UK and not courier.
Mines was recently posted -took 20 days to get to me, but didn't pay a dime.
R416.46?! Jikes. Are you sure? Because that is beyond excessive. You can always give customs a call and they can give you a breakdown and then you will know where it all went wrong...
Yip, RS Components. What extras did you order with the Pi?
We were three at work that ordered Pi's, I paid R286.79 taxes on mine, another guy paid R78.44 for his and the other guy paid R15.00 :wtf: And all out package contents were the same.
It is clear that they didn't send everyone on the same 5 week calculator training course there at customs.
I purchase quite a lot of electronic and photographic equipment from overseas via eBay and other online retailers. It has become clear to me that there is absolutely no logic nor system to the customs charges that are applied to the goods I receive. It is almost impossible to predict what they will charge when I go fetch my parcels at the post office. I've had the same devices delivered on three separate occasions from the same supplier at the same price, yet been charged three different amounts at the post office.
Nevermind the fact that goods get stuck in Customs for ages these days...
Having said that though, I've actually been inside the Customs office at OR Tambo, and it doesn't surprise me: that place is an absolute shambles. Even Home Affairs puts them to shame these days. Customs falls under SARS, yet the rest of SARS is so organised these days - I wish they'd take a stab at sorting out the Customs office.
My dad n I ordered 2, to the same post box.
His, was R85
Mine, just received slip now, is R 242 :wtf:
Ridiculous... I email SARS asking for a break down of the costs.
