It was an MWEB issue, something broke on their side (MWEB host those sites - was down on other channels as well)

Hi there....Can any of the Iburst guys help me out..I do a lot of downloading after hours. I have a 2 & 1 meg modem.I never had a problem with speeds until recently. For the past two days my connection speeds have dropped and inevitably the modem disconnects.I even put on a good amount of redial attempts in the event if it disconnects but it does'nt even reconnect....I become so frustated that i even stopped using the net..I know there is a problem with the signal because i watch the led indicators on the 1 meg modem.....It goes off, then goes full, then half then off....Is there a problem with seacom or base towers? I would appreciate any help...I live in Groblerspark

Both modems doing the same thing? (definitely not a seacom issue)

Location: East Rand - Alberton (Brackenhurst)
Signal Strength: 98%-100%
FER: <1%
Occurs on: 2 seperate modems running on 2 seperate computers.

Problem: A lot of timeouts and connection errors, especially with secure connections. Started a couple of weeks ago.

Details:
Connecting to a secure website (with HTTPS), Firefox (latest version) gives me errors e.g. SEC_ERROR_OCSP_SERVER_ERROR and SEC_ERROR_IO errors, which (according to some Google searches) could mean "that an intermediate device, such as a router or a firewall, is blocking TCP port 443 requests to the server" when connecting to the OCSP server... However, I have no firewalls running on one machine and the iBurst modem is directly connected via USB (i.e. no router). However, two seconds later, it works correctly. This includes Facebook, Google and even my bank.

Sending an e-mail using GMail's SMTP server over SSL, larger than ~500kb, Thunderbird (latest version) gives me SSL_ERROR_BAD_MAC_ALERT or it just Times Out.

The reason I suspect iBurst is 2 seperate computers give me the same problems running different operating systems and iBurst has been having problems in the East Rand for quite some time now. Oh, and I have NONE of these problems using MTN.

I will gladly provide further information if required, but please investigate.

EDIT: I see iBurst Incident Report still has East Rand degradation as "In Progress". Is this still true?

The east rand issue was resolved but there is ongoing maintenance work in the area. Please PM me your UTIDs so we can verify on the BTS.

I sent my UTIDs yesterday morning. Some time during the day, signal went dead and funny for a little while. I sent a largish email from both computers this morning - no problem. Also haven't had any errors when connecting to secure sites. Latency also seems better.

Thanks r00i! Dunno what you did, but really appreciate it!

Well, problem's back :(

By the end of October the Pretoria BTS will be connected to a fibre node at Centurion and the east rand to Primrose and Johannesburg CBD.

Is there any update on this upgrade? What will the overall impact be on the Pretoria network? I have noticed that the speeds I have been obtaining has been significantly slower for the past month so I hope this will return things to normal or improve the network?

When will this be done for west rand?

Btw this last week speed and latency has been quite poor in west rand and fourways.

The real route to help from iBurst?!

How one currently get real help from iBurst. I need help, because my u/l speed is 0 (zero).

I am not prepared to sit on the phone, on the day I registered I waited half an hour to find out that sales at head office does not work on Saturday mornings @ R28-00.

iBurst has a lot of legalese on how they are covered, but very little on what a client can do to get them to do what they promise and charge you for. Well at this stage, they charged me a connection fee -- if I cannot upload then I am not connected.:(

Unluckily you mentioned the wrong L word.
