*READ FIRST* iBurst Network Status & Issues (DNS, Throughput and Latency)

Yet we still pay the full price for this crap speed and simply rediculous latency. And after midnight it does not improve much either.
Melanie, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sort this out. Is it fair to be paying the full price for a 2Mb modem and connection when all we are stuck with is terribly slow speed? No, it is not.

We are paying for a service we are not getting, and this has been going on since late November/early December last year. I reckon 6+ months has been long enough now, seriously.

I tried to download updates for my computer last night and finally gave up - three hours later and a 4 MB file was stuck at 3%. Been like this since my previous post, really unhappy with this. :-(

Very lucky.
Took over 7 days to download 6.2GB from Adobe's website......

"Speed" and "iBurst" should not be used in the same sentence in Jhb or Pretoria. Seems only the CT guys are having luck getting decent speeds.

I started downloading Psychonauts (4.1GB) using bittorrent at about 2am this morning, when I woke up it was done.

In fairness, I was able to download 1.4GB from a VERY badly seeded torrent this morning. In general speeds aren't too bad, EXCEPT YouTube and some other Google services...

Hehehe! Yes... Mine's been pretty good for ages, but last few nights have been pointless. Surely there's some fault that's causing this? Isie is near me and is also having huge problems.

Guys, lets not bucket the whole of Joburg and Pretoria into the same bracket. I am getting very decent speeds on my modems at night in Pretoria - not too far from Bursty-dude so there is possibly a issue with selected towers (even though I think we share similar towers). I don't want to distress Bursty so I won't mention how much I am downloading but I am sure it also depends on where you are downloaded from and how (and what) :)

Agreed it does go through cycles where there are different speeds but I am mostly lucky in that the speeds are predominately similar unless there are huge issues.

Well, Isie is same area as me, from discussions we are most likely using the same tower, and both of us are having identical problems...despite the iBurst website showing no issues. So while I'm awfully happy about your good luck, some of us are clearly not that fortunate and it would be great to hear from iBurst what has gone wrong and when it's going to be fixed...

yep constant disconnects And really crappy speeds on a 2MB modem, yesterday only managed to only connect properly at 10PM before that online for few minutes.

wife was home and she said the entire day she kept getting disconnected , she gave up and switched on her 3g

decided to compre my old 1MB modem now to my 2MB logicaly speaking placing them at the same place should yield what ever the 2MB gets the 1Mb should be 1/2 but noo:

2MB modem
Test conducted on 06 June 2012 05:21:53 PM
Download Speed: 309 kbps (38.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 43 kbps (5.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 544 ms

1MB Modem
Test conducted on 06 June 2012 05:29:44 PM
Download Speed: 354 kbps (44.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 135 kbps (16.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 173 ms

1MB slightly better?

my after hours speeds (touchwood) no problems, but I cant go on any websites during the day what's the pont

Blast, you're lucky...
The luck of the bounce, I guess.

I got the UTW a week ago and stuck it in the window of my kitchen as I hadn't decided whether to get a splitter or a second omni.
Although the signal strength is worse than the external omni on my UTD (-89dBm vs -79dBm), the UTW has aligned to a closer base station (2.4km vs 3.0km).
I think the main difference though is the closer base station usually has a load of 1 or 2, while the further base station always has a load of 3.

Hmm, yes, tonight was a *bit* better. Weird that the 1MB modem better than the 2MB one?!

I can understand a slight discrepancy like on the download speed, but the big difference in upload and latency ?

Yeah, you have me on that... And I spoke too soon. Update from Hewlett Packard hanging again, MWEB message centre took 4 attempts to load, and now Facebook not loading. I can live with one night of crap speeds, accepted, but now DAYS??! Hello, iBurst? Some feedback?

Leek, speeds used to be way above 2mb/s even during the day (go check on the 2Mb modem thread and on the Speedtest results thread, there are loads of results I posted). Used to regularly see over 2.2Mb/s right through the day and at night speeds would hover around 2.4 or so. During storms speeds would be just under 2Mb/s as well. All round I was very very happy with the speed. Note: was.

And that was with the modem on my study windowsill with no external antenna fitted.

Ever since the new packages were released, speeds dropped to below 0.3Mb/s even after midnight. Simple case of massively overloaded towers as shown to me by the Techs who fitted the antenna and did testing of towers in the area.

Melanie arranged for a flat panel antenna to be fitted after I moaned for months about the speed issue and it is on a 3 metre high pole above our house roof. Speeds did improve from the crappy 0.3Mb/s and less, to around 1Mb/s, still half of what it used to be. But it has gone south once more and nothing gets done about our complaints, sadly.

Overloaded towers in this area are the sole problem here. I don't know what iBurst is doing about it, but that is not my problem. We just want want we pay for. I even suggested at one stage that they could have a corner of our property to put up a tower, but nothing even came of that.

Edited to add the latest "Speed"test result:

I agree with all of you that the day time speeds are not what they should be. Overloaded towers is most probably the issue here and I agree this needs to be looked at and upgraded. Bursty which tower/towers are in your area that you use? Other PTA users? Which towers? Maybe the issues are around a single area?

In the past day or two there has been a tower out but it seemed better last night.
