Ready for Linux?

The linux developers need to realise that if linux is to become mainstream you have got to design the product for mainstream and that means upsetting the hardcore fan base! So it has to look good, be user friendly and just work when you plug something in to it. I reckon that part of the reason linux is where it is today is that it was first designed for the programmers and became almost an exclusive club while Windows (maybe a bad example) and OSX focused on the consumer. Now linux is having to play catchup by trying to drop its nerdy reputation and become more sexy. Like a previous poster said even the names of the programs are silly which still shows who its real target market is.

Playing catch up? Perhaps in the end user (which is what you are) desktop department. It was not initially designed as a desktop system, but as a server and networking OS. Of which its the best in the industry. Windows cant even get close to grabbing the market from it. Why? Because linux servers dominate and are the best solutions. Windows sucks balls there. You will find linux on your routers, servers, watches, cars, medical devices and anything that you require stability and security with. Complaining about the names of programs... well I have no answer to that.. its doff complaint. End of story.

Linux has only recently started heading into its desktop phase (by this I mean, it was only a half assed thought in the past), so expect great things in the near future.

Funny how Linux users always jump on the "it makes Awesome servers" bandwagon when we're taking about pc users.
Funny how Windows users always jump on the "it can play Games" bandwagon when we talk about pc users.
Funny how i only love OSX when it comes to using a pc.

Not everyone needs a system with training wheels on it. Some of us actually do more than edit pretty pictures or send the occasional email :) Macs are intended for the training wheel kinda person, and if that works for you, fantastic! Keep to it. I have a macbook, its used more as a paper weight than anything else because my other laptop out performs it and does more. It is very useful to give to guests as a spare laptop when they visit though. Mac should thank its stars for FOSS, it uses enough of it ;) (Yup, they use stuff developed by the Free open source community to enable their macs to work ).

The reason why Macs are so niche and fail so bad in sales (when compared to PC sales), is because of the versatility of the PC. Its the reason Microsoft almost sunk Apple in the beginning.. and only their cute lil mp3 player was able to save the dying cow.

Who cares what you use or why you use it, just make sure what you are using works for you and you are happy with it.

Mac
windows
Linux are all well capable OS's to get your shyte done but only linux will free you according to wizard.

Not a programmer are you?
Open source means you can ... WTF ... do I have to explain this to you ?
In a Nut(s)shell:
Anybody can download the source (OS or any software), modify, redistribute to innocent newbies (like you?), with malicious code of any type implanted in the original code...

.. as the (Arm (afrikaans))mericans say ... go figure.

Ah.

The Security through Obscurity model.

I'm afraid that one won't fly. Apart from anything else, Microsoft released their source code for Windows as part of their contractual obligation to the Chinese some years ago.

Precisely because Linux is opensource guarantees it's security; the code is read and dissected by thousands of programmers across the globe who check it for bugs and security flaws. Certainly, that's a resource Microsoft cannot lay claim to.

I have been using computers since 1980. (Sperry UniVAC, ForTran)

I believe the Microsoft OS, when combined with Active Directory are WINNERS !!!
The two offer excellent security and ease of adoption where flexibility, stability, integration and cost (especially Admin costs/fees) are concerned.
After using MS products since DOS, and then using Windows through to the current versions, these are currently the best technologies, and are constantly getting better.
Open source may be free but security from viruses are the ultimate challenge. You can't protect open source.

M$ + Hijacked LDAP? So you think Linux cannot run LDAP? I don't think you should make comments on Linux any more, because it appears to be FUD :(

It can talk to Exchange, but looks like crap compared to Outlook. Talk to and integrate to exchange in the sense that Outlook does is also totally different.

Lets measure it in a fair way. A closed proprietary protocol reversed engineered is not working the way you expect it to? Go figure. If you want it to work, then pay Microsoft for the license and specification and then release your closed source plugin for free.

but only linux will free you according to wizard.

I said that? Really? Where? Oh, I said only Linux can set you free right after you admitted to sexually abusing goats. However, they must have being deleted because the only one left in this thread it me saying that once you learn linux it sets you free :) Go mods :D

I figured since you are making up ****, I might as well :)

Apart from my goat fetish (which by the way comes because i have family from aus) why does linux set you free? Free from what? I do not understand that comment.

Once you figure out Linux, it sets you free. Its not for everyone, but I love it.

All i was asking is why it sets you free? No need to go all ape and get worked up wiz.

Its something that cant be explained that one can only experience. Its a personal experience (and therefore subjective) that I have also heard from many other linux users.

Wow dude, chill out, relax, stop foaming at the mouth, I was just answering ;) ( I like this game, you can make up stuff about what the other person is saying or feeling without it having to be true )

Yup so linux sets you free :D

Seems loads of people are using the term to describe linux but the real meaning well nobody can actually say for sure but i guess saying is it cool or something :D.

Linux sets you freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee o yea now i feel cool.

Why are people so sensitive about OS topics. i didn't even say anything bad about anyone and they stone me. is it maybe because i use OSX?...i don't know...

Yup so linux sets you free :D

Maybe I can help here.

Still remember the first time I installed Ubuntu 9.04 - and after 20 minutes it was done.

Being an old Windows faithful, while the install was busy, I started getting out all my driver disks, Office 2003, application disk with Nero, PowerDVD, etc ....just to realise - I dont need any of this!!

After the 20 minute install, everything I needed, was installed. It really screws your mind up for a few minutes and then you just sit there and think - this is awesome. :)

I kinda decided I'm not hardcore enough to run linux 24/7. Not my fight...mostly because I'm not going into the tech business so the hours investment don't make sense to me.

zomg. We need a lynching party asap. Killa you go grab a rope and I'll find a suitable tree & then we'll sort this dude out.
