Ok, heres the story.

Same old same old - my pc restarts (I've noticed it does it most when I watch a movie/youtube/flash) out of the blue.

Compnents:

Intel Dual Core E2160 1.8GH
2Gb Super-Talent DDR2 800
MSI G31-M Mobo
forget which HDD maker - 160Gb (SATA)
OLD CDr (LG)
MSI TV@nywhere Pro

History:

Bought from and assembled by Cyberdyne. Only CDr and HDD was my own work and I know everything is done properly. All the components are spanking new, not even 3 weeks as of writing this. Only the CD is old. IT used to give me a BSOD until I reinstalled Windows - now it just restarts.

Extra:

I haven't installed the drivers of the TV@nywhere yet as I thought it might be that card which is causing the restarts. All other drivers (bar none) are fresh downloads.

Help me please!

Forgot to mention

Temp running fine, never seen it go above 40 for the CPU, rarely hits 35. The system is a bit higher, but well within normal ranges according to SpeedFan.

I've checked my memory - its right as rain according to two programs used (MS' and another one provided on the forum)

Cheers!

Hi there, I'd say check out the PSU, could be dodgy. Also check your mobo for any physical damage. You could have a busted cap somewhere. Let us know what happens.

Right click your my computer, properties, advanced tab, startup and recovery section, settings button, under system failure, unselect 'automatically restart'. Your system will now stop on bluescreen so you can see what the heck is causing your crashes.

Had a similar problem recently. System hangs/crashes, mostly randomly, more often in movies/games. Turned out to be the processor. thisgeek's suggestion to find out what's causing the problem is a good one.

Yea check that E2160's heatsink, they don't seat correctly in some mobo's like yours [have the same setup and CPU was getting 85°C ]. Also have you, tried to watch the vid's with out the TV anyware installed? - ie: completly rermove it from your system and check.

on my one PC it restarts the moment i open some video files (only certain ones though). pc could have been running all day, but just double click those gametrailer.com review files and BOOM, instant restart

my solution was to NOT click the files that rebooted my machine :D

Had a similar prob on an older system, turned out to be the cd/dvd writer. Replaced that and have had no issues since (also tried changing psu first but that did not help)

Try testmem86+ to check your memory for problems.

Might be a codec which needs reinstalling.

if it is a Codec problem you could try the CCCP
btw does it crash when you click on the AVI file and Windows show's a preview on the Details Tab? It happens to me sometimes with .rmvb files but it just says that windows has encouterd a error and needs to shutdown Mycomputer, no restart at all.

Hey all,

Thanks for the answers. Seems its running fine now - I opened up a page with lots of shockwave, played ping pong on miniclip and watched youtube and watched ill will press - foamy's rants (all at the same time) and everything seems alright.

As I had mentioned in my earlier posts, the cpu heat was not a problem as I had already tested it and it never really ran into the upper degrees. mem is fine, double checked it. It seems to be the TV@nywhere card. the question now is... what do i do with it. i specifically bought that card to convert some ancient tapes to dvd (card costs around 350 as opposed to 20+ videos at 300 rand a pop to convert proffesionally) - and it seems now as if i cant use the card in my pc.

what to what to do? should i try putting it in the other pci slot?

Hey all, recently happened again - first when i was playing dota (BSOD, rtkHDAudio something something) then again when i was listening to music (standard rubbish IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL_TO)... so this must be a problem with my (onboard soundcard)... but a conflict doesnt show up in device manager.

could it be because of the legacy audio drivers installed by windows on startup?

Any help would be very welcome...

My onboard sound driver used to conflict with my nVidia drivers. Used to do the exact same thing you describe, just restart at random times. I finally got a hint from a blue screen of death that mentioned a conflict with my sound driver. I just updated those drivers and the problem went away.

Agreed, it's very likely that the sound driver is causing the problems. Update it to the latest version if you haven't already.
