Nissan Tiida Sedan ticks everything on your list. I have a Livina, same engine. Cheap to service, parts readily availible. No cam belt, uses chain.

or maybe an Almera

That looks a bit bez valley for my tastes...what is that black thing on the bonnet?

That black thing on the bonnet is called the hood scoop. It allows a direct flow of air to the engine, which is why need for it to be raised up to effectively channel air to the engine. It may be closed or purely decorative, or serve to enhance performance in several possible ways.

Nissan Almera or Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Ikon are other alternatives if you want something newer from 2013 with less mileage.
Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic would still be my pick.

If you want a comfortable and safe ride, you can get a pretty low mileage* good condition Merc C class (W203 facelift, 2004 - 2007) for your price range.

* low for the age, and they're built well enough to do very high mileage.

Wrong :)

The scoop pushes air into the intercooler, not into the engine. The intercooler cools the air going into the engine (which comes in from a different spot). The cooler the air, the more dense it is, and more power comes out.

As for picking that Subaru - nice car but it will kill you on fuel consumption.

What car are you trying to replace ... I prefer the older cars (10y+) since most of the new cars are only build to last 100 000km or 5 years and they all look the same.

For 120k you can get a relatively new Mitsubishi Lancer. 2.0L engine, plenty of power and I still get about 11km/l to work and back. Highway its 13 to 14 km/l. Also looks nice, you get balance of service plan and warranty. Not sure about parts cost, but these are very reliable cars. The boot is massive, and I am 1,95m and there is still plenty of space above my head.

Here are a few 2010 and 2011 models below R120k.

...what is that black thing on the bonnet?

Select one:
* It vents the fur on the dash
* Makes it easier for the speedies to hand you the speeding ticket. Something like a letter box.
* Vent into the cabin, because anything lower down will just draw in smoke from burning rubber all the time
* It is actually a mass of lead to balance the wing on the boot

(All TIC! It is the Herschelle Gibbs of cars - all attitude and noise, but with the talent to back it up)

Since when are Fords "zef"

Since the 60's.
ZEF
During the 60's and 70's the Ford Zephyr was a favourite car by a particular group of South Africans, they also often wore a comb in their socks, and were considered as 'common' or kitch or low class by others, the term ZEF was coined to descibe them.

The word would be used to describe the style of a particular person.

The word could also be used in a derogatory manner by someone who considered themself of higher class or better breeding.
Bernoldus Niemand aka James Phillips, a South African musician who came from a mining town is a good example of a zef person and so is some of his lyrics eg: Welcome to my car.

Usually young men who drove Ford Zephyrs, hung their arm out of the window, and wore a comb stuck into one sock would be considered zef.

More recently, South African rap artists Die Antwoord and Jack Parow would be the embodiment of what zef is.
