Compared to what rival?? Compare it on paper and the drive, its crap - I had one as a rental a few mths back, took it straight back to OR
Compared to the Koreans? Drove a 2010 i20 with a peeling door handle...

Compared to a Polo Vivo (the quest in this case), the build quality....

The new Corolla is also a big step up from the previous gen

Interior: Cheap plastic everywhere. Agree the new ones look slightly better as they are trying less to look Jap crap and more Euro.

Im going to say the Vivo look and feel is way better, note the Vivo is the old polo, so the styling is much older, and before you compare these models take note of the following:
Polo Vivo 1.4 = R143k (http://www.vw.co.za/en/models/polo_...trimlevel_detail.suffix.html/hatch~2F1_4.html)
Toyota Crapolla 1.3 = R224k http://www.toyota.co.za/ranges/corolla#models
Quest 1.6 - R198k
Vivo 1.6 - R171k

So keep buying this Jap crap because the high price must mean its quality. That price compares with the VW Jetta and its certainly no competitor for that.

Thats cause you prob drive one - i dont drive VAG, but you really saying JapCrap over German auto, you been sleeping under a rock the last few years?

Boet, if you are looking for a car in that segment and want a proper German car BUILT IN GERMANY then the Astra Sedan is the only real option.

haahaha, that must correlate to why they have lost so much market share and almost went belly-up over the years - I cannot slate Astra very fairly, as I dont or have ever driven one, but surely market stats dont lie.

Sales and market share does not correlate directly into how good something is. It is common knowledge that the average South Africa is one of the most classless and tasteless car buyer on planet earth. So if you have to decide between a Corolla, Jetta or Astra and you do not want something dull as doorknobs its a no-brainer.

Totally agree that the Jetta is a much better buy... But blowing it off isn't ideal, it's still not a bad buy, especially used where you can get a 2013 for R150k if I recall correctly

Personally I did not like the looks of the Astra H, but now that I have one it is growing on me. The ride is solid, a bit disconnected, but the interior is rattle free and well assembled.

So did the 1,2,3 rule apply when you bought the 10+ year old vehicle

1 litre Brandy
2 litre Coke
3 litre Ford Bakkie

Very Zef Ek See
No, I bought it new 10 years ago. It is not zef, it is just a bit of a noddy car. A sweetie  but not suitable for our purposes any longer.

You drive a pink Alfa? Just have it sprayed red then and it will be awesome. It might not actually go anywhere, though.

What Roux means is that if you are common, this is your knowledge :D

So, Opel's 36% increase in sales in South Africa does not correlate to Opel actually offering good cars for once? Consumers truly are classless then :p

Sensible reliable options can be had for much cheaper than 120k. I consider that amount quite high for those criteria. If he isn't too concerned about performance and looks you can narrow down to other factors like fuel economy, reliability, storage space, seating capacity, and that will give an idea of what is the best option.

As much as I'd like to believe it I'm taking the claimed 36% increase in sales with a pinch of salt. That said they will never be a volume seller, GMSA has [-]Deawoo[/-] Chevrolet for that.
