Since the 60's.
ZEF
During the 60's and 70's the Ford Zephyr was a favourite car by a particular group of South Africans, they also often wore a comb in their socks, and were considered as 'common' or kitch or low class by others, the term ZEF was coined to descibe them.

The word would be used to describe the style of a particular person.

The word could also be used in a derogatory manner by someone who considered themself of higher class or better breeding.
Bernoldus Niemand aka James Phillips, a South African musician who came from a mining town is a good example of a zef person and so is some of his lyrics eg: Welcome to my car.

Usually young men who drove Ford Zephyrs, hung their arm out of the window, and wore a comb stuck into one sock would be considered zef.

More recently, South African rap artists Die Antwoord and Jack Parow would be the embodiment of what zef is.

:p

Yeah but I doubt you will be buying a ZEF Ford from the 70's... I would not regard something like the Fusion as zef...

Looking at your suggestions, I quite like the look of the Kia Cerato actually.

Wrong :)

The scoop pushes air into the intercooler, not into the engine. The intercooler cools the air going into the engine (which comes in from a different spot). The cooler the air, the more dense it is, and more power comes out.

As for picking that Subaru - nice car but it will kill you on fuel consumption.
I know, I tried to explain it in plain simple english without going into to technical details in short. I mean't engine compartment.
Now you have to explain what is a intercooler? Those who don;t know much cars who don't know what a scoop is would also not know what intercooler is? I don't feel like writing a essay.

One of our cars is over 10 years old, is rare, and it is time to replace. Looking at the new cars is a bit depressing as the prices are huge for rubbish. Can anyone recommend a reliable, "sensible" 2nd hand car for my husband:

Reliable
Parts and service reasonable
Say 1600 engine (speed not an issue)
Sedan-type with reasonable boot size, even a station wagon
Conservative but tasteful
Husband is tall so not a low roof
Preferably not "zef" like opel monza or ford

Budget: max R120k (less would be better)

You really think that you can afford a Delta Motor Corporation of South Africa Opel Monza 160i GSi Car of the Year 1991 with that budget? Pfft.

No prob, being a scoob owner I feel it is my duty ;)

Clarkson explained it best "air goes into the turbo, witchcraft happens, and the car goes faster"

That car is completely sensible. And the sellers name you ask? Freddy. Most reliable name ever. You almost know for sure he wont screw you over.

The only car more sensible than that won the car of the year award in 1991.

Cant believe the boring people that still buy Toyota. 2015 year old car with 10 year old tech, and 15 yr old looking design. Obviously they will tell you its reliable, there is no other complement you can give such ugliness and of course a car with window winders will be more reliable than electric windows after 10 years. Loyal Toyotaists would go so far as to buy a piece of dog turd with a Toyota badge on it. Well it does have many similarities to a Corolla.

When was the last time you drove a Corolla? Yes, it's not the most amazing car and it's hardly fun to drive but it's really not so bad when compared to its rivals.

I don't own one and don't plan on buying one... Just saying
