Hi all

Could anyone who has experience with this please assist in recommending a vps provider for hosting a game server.

The requirements are :
Linux ubuntu server 14.04
Two Xeon cores minimum at 2.2 ghz or higher
2Gb minimum memory, 4 preferred
1 to 1.5 TB monthly data transfer. Mostly local but some international is generated as well.
Ability to upgrade vps hardware with little to no downtime if needed.
30-50Gb enterprise or SSD HD
99 uptime
20 - 40 Mbs line

Any assistance would be appreciated

VPS providers are welcome to PM me a quote along with details of CPU speed per core, Memory, Bandwidth, overage, HDD size and class etc.

Many Thanks
Fonoi

You can try out oceanhost.co.za i have a 2 core 10Gb vps with them they are very very good for game servers. Downloading via SSH i get around 20 - 50Mbps.

Their machines are all inline to what you mentioned above except the bandwidth is only 400Gb

Definitely 99% uptime

You can upgrade the hardware quick quick just ask You would just reboot the vps and the new hardware will show so pretty much 0% downtime

Best to do is go here http://www.oceanhost.co.za/virtual-private-servers-vps/vps-hosting you can get a 7 day trial to try out and if you like it they will just switch you the the paid service. you can also email them on [email protected] or add them on skype at oceanhost.za

Just tell them that Nukecraft sent you they will know what to do :)

You can try host1plus. They seem like the cheapest solution that have local servers.

Yes, they are great. I have a few VPS with them but the main problems are the CPU is only 1.7Ghz and their terms state that it should not be used to host game servers.

Generally I prefer to adhere to the terms of the providers.

Thank you I will contact them and see if they can do anything regarding the bandwidth, I am not sure how much I will actually use for this server as this is an estimate I was given. May very well be less, but pretty expensive to take a chance :)

The 7 days trial option seems good, should be enough time to get an idea of how much bandwidth I will use in a month.

What games you planning on hosting? Very little come close to 1TB even on busy game servers. :)

Maybe give digitalocean.com a try? You can google for coupons and basically host it for a month or 2 for free to test it out. Not sure if they allow gaming as well. Closest server is London though.

Thank you, it has to be local unfortunately and the only provider that offers these servers locally is backordered and has no ETA. I need this server up by month end, so I will go the VPS route.

Wish it could be international, then I could get it hosted dirt cheap. hehe

7 Days to Die, 25 - 32 players.

+1 for Oceanhost, had a reply in a few minutes.

lowendbox.com - post on there and someone can make you a custom offer.

What's your budget and location etc?

For $20-$30 a month you could get a cheap dedi x5150 with 16GB DDR2 / 500GB HDD in the US, for Europe i'd try someone like kimsufi.com who provide nice cheap dedi's in France.

Thank you for the reply, must be local hosting in Cape Town or JHB. I will checkout lowendbox.com , you never know if someone has contacts locally.

Edit: Oceanhost's service so far has been amazing, quick reply's and they are even willing to go the extra mile for a request I had.

Bandwidth is going to be your issue when going local, 1TB per month is a lot.

With 1TB bandwidth per month, there sadly is only a single provider in SA doing that, starting with VPS's at R300 a month.

You're talking nonsense. Host1plus.com wil do 1TB of bandwidth at IS in JHB for $4 a month. That's a far cry from the R300 you mention...

Their terms do not allow the hosting of game servers, taking a chance like that is not a good idea since they can cancel your service at any time. The dedicated server software is not optimized at the moment, even on a decent VPS looks like it is not feasible at this time.

So I am waiting for the optimized build promised in 6-8 weeks. Hopefully it will make a difference.

I was told in a live support chat that hosting game servers on the VPS is allowed.

I have a question.. they told me that the speed is up to 50mbps -- is that enough for hosting a game server without lag?

Depending on contention that should be more then enough

Definitely would want to check out local options. Hosting game servers on an international VPS would not be ideal. Check out something at Web Africa, VPS I have, matches those requirements.

Just bare in mind that you will most likely have an occasion or two when you get hit by lag spikes because of it being a shared service, effectively.
