I get the following error when ever I explore my computer:

"System error, Your system is infected with dangerous virus! Note: Strongly recommend to install antispyware program to and avoid total crash of your computer! Click OK to download the antispyware. (Recommended)"

I know this is caused by a virus and not by windows, and I know that if I click on the OK button it will probably download all its nasty little friends.

I've scanned my computer with the AVG 7.5 but it found nothing :(

Can anyone recommend another free antivirus

Try the 30-day trial version of Eset NOD32 as well just to get rid of this one :)

But I agree with tera's recommendations :)

You are most likely infected with a variant of Spyware Quake... Is there a security notification icon in your system tray notifying you to download antispyware software...? If so, I have compiled a manual for removing it, or you can alternatively download / google SmitFraudFix and Malwarebyte's AntiMalware. They are working nice to remove that type of stuff... Good luck...

Thanks, I've started downloading now, but with my connection, it might be a while.. I'll let you know how things go.

I'd suggest Spybot Search & Destroy.

What you describe is not really a virus, but kinda more in the Malware/adware category. Not all antiviruses search for adware.

Yup, Get Spybot and once it's off Get a Anti-Virus! no telling what els could get onto your PC. :(

Also what Operating System are you using?

Try Avast Free Edition or AVG Free :D both very good!

update avg to version 8, update the database of avg after u installed it, run full scan in safe mode, (command prompt will run), after than download a program called HiJackThis.... run that also in safe mode

AVG's updates are very small.
Just let it update once a week if you want to save bandwith
[Virus database ver. 1480/1321 92 KB lol thats minute! :p]

I downloaded, installed and ran spybot. It found 42 little nasties but still get my error :(

While spybot was searching it did come up with the error: "There were problems in the include file C:\program Files spybot - Search_Destroy\Includes\trojans.sbi"

Has that got to do with anything

Personal Recommendation?

www.bitdefender.com

In my opinion, the world's most effective Internet Security solution. :)

I have a clients pc here that has bitdefender and it missed several viruses, even after an update and full scan it doesn't pick it it, I installed another AV and it picked up the viruses.

You sure it was the latest version? BitDefender 2008?
