Recommended Inverter Generator

Ah yes I see now where he got the 2.5KW from but yes that 10A is definately not on the AC side. I wouldn't need a very big generator to charge my inverter batteries.

So for me it would come down to whether a generator with an AVR (which produces modified sine wave) would be ok for charging my inverter batteries and running PC's would be ok or whether I would be better off with a pure sine wave generator to be safe
Generator with AVR (and any other generator on the planet) produces pure sine wave
 
Here is a screenshot of my manual. 5kva model. Maybe the smaller models can charge at a lower current.

Changing above 10A causes my generator to trip.

Remeber it is 240V input and not 54V as the batteries.

This is what I use.

It is an inverter generator meaning the voltage regulator is an inverter.
I would recommend getting something similar rather using a cheap Chinese generator and potentially damaging your setup
 
Not from what I understand. The voltage is not consistant and neither is the frequency. That is why they recommend against running sensitive equipment on a normal generator. Only an inverter generator will give pure sine wave output due to the conversion from DC to AC and the internal battery
Not true. Depends on your generator. I have a Yamaha (EF2600) that's rock steady both voltage and frequency. OK maybe the frequency varies 1hz & 10v up or down. Doesn't have AVR either AFAIK. Honda I suspect would be the same.

Various inverters I have used have never had a problem with it incl APC.

Can't vouch for Ryobi or other Chinese generators tho.

Yes, but there is a massive difference between a quality product like Honda and cheap "junk", and I include Ryobi in the cheap junk bracket.

Well most (even sensitive) equipment should accept between 50-60hz and 220-240v. If those gennies can't even manage to keep somewhere within those ranges then they even worse than the eskom power! Inverter type would probably be a better choice in that case.
