Hi,

I've registered a domain with hetzner (Domain only, no hosting package). i would like the domain to redirect to another domain,I've changed www A records to the other servers ip address and when i type www.domain.co.za it redirects fine but when i type domain.co.za it goes to reserved for domain.co.za.

is there a way i can get around this without getting a hosting package?

If you want to redirect to another domain (not server) then rather use an .htaccess file. You can use Hetzner's Webserver Config to setup a permanent redirect to the new or alternative domain.

Changing DNS records won't work unless the domain has been setup on the server you are pointing DNS to.

Correct me if I am wrong but it sounds like you probably have two A records then.

www record pointing to the IP address you want
naked domain record pointing to an IP that you haven't changed yet in which case you have to and setup the domain on the server you pointing it to like Ray7905 said.

I prefer the one A record for the domain and a CNAME for the www record so I only have to change the one.

How is he going to do that, without a server?

If your domain's A record and www record are set to the same IP then the web server managing the redirect for your domain is not setup with the host header and therefore doesnt know what to do when http://domain is received.
