Reflexology anyone?

There is no documented evidence of some sort of link between your foot and your head.

Reflexology does not claim that it is a relaxing foot massage that helps calm you down and relax you. That claim I would have no problem with. Instead the claim is that areas on your feet correspond to areas of your body and that manipulation of those areas on your foot result in physical effects in the associated zone of your body. They also mention energy fields and unblocking your Qi among other zany stuff like curing cancer. Those are the controversial claims that reflexology makes and they have never been demonstrated to be anything but k@k.

Supporters of alternative healing will attempt to dance around that fact and instead talk about how relaxing it is but at the end of the day that isn't what reflexologists are claiming. Their actual claims (reflexology can cure cancer etc.) are about as well supported as those of astrologists predicting your future however they can be much much more dangerous.
Thanks, good to know :)

Let me put it this way:

I did not make a deliberate effort to see this reflexologist, in fact I thought she was a physiotherapist of some sort, but her mother told me that she was having big hassles with her internet and email, so would I mind going to have a look, since I fixed hers.

So I went around and cleaned off several years of junk and sorted out the PC and network. Over a cup of tea I asked her what she did and she mentioned reflexology. I had heard of it but had no idea what was involved. So we go into her consulting room and there are these charts on the wall displaying parts of your body that are said to benefit from certain manipulations. She said that my ankle injury, which is a physical issue, would probably not benefit from whatever it is she did, but my well-being is something she could focus on. She expressed the view that I was by now, after 20 months, somewhat frustrated at being physically confined to hopping around with a crutch and not being my usual active self. So I lay down on her couch and she proceeded to very lightly touch portions of my foot underneath, my upper arm and neck. She said she could see that I was not a stressed type of person and asked me to come back in 4 days time. I honestly could not tell whether anything was happening or not, but found it easier to fall and stay asleep after 3 sessions. Normally, I would wake up at about 3.00am and lie there counting sheep for about 30 mins. Now I sleep right through to 7.30 am even though the sun is up at 6.00. And I have recounted the experience with the orthopeadic surgeon in post #169, but I do not directly attribute this to anything the reflexologist did.

I doubt I will be going back again, since I can not see that, apart from the sleep aspect, anything else has improved. I understand her sessions cost R 350 a pop, so I got my R 1000 worth by 45 mins work on two computers. A reasonable trade I thought? I don't usually charge for first visits to fix computers and did not ask for any money.

Sister in law is a reflexologist and operates from a practice in Sandton which she shares with a chiropractor, masseuse and chiropodist. She is always full up and only sees customers (she does not call them patients) from 9.00 until 1.00. She makes a reasonable living and feels that she adds value to people's lives.

Some of the claims attributed to reflexologists are outrageous and silly. They are performing a service, you are not forced to go but if you believe that it will help, then it will. Going in with a negative attitude is a waste of everyone's time.

What claims does your sister make about the efficacy of reflexology?

perhaps your improved sleep is a placebo effect ?

Going in with a negative attitude is a waste of everyone's time.

Oh right. So clearly you're admitting that it's all in the mind. Otherwise this negative attitude would have no impact...

Like most homeopathic and energy balancing things they rely heavily on the mind. The issue is we know scientifically its rubbish however if a placebo effect is achieved then is it really a bad thing?

I think thats the bigger issue with things like this that is why they have reports of success

Firstly, it's not based "heavily on the mind". It is entirely there. And success should be benchmarked against placebos, in which case they come out about as effective as placenta-eating cancer treatments....

Well if they did that they be out of business :P

Some people are too cool for normal medical practice, like steve jobs. Diagnosed with cancer used alternate "medicine" first, cost him his life

Your last sentence says it all.

Aaaaawwwwwww... cry me a river.

People who are emphatically and demonstrably wrong about stuff should be told & shown they are. There are a vast number of things where, yes, there is an only right way of looking at things. Deal with it.

Geez Dude, so you know everything? You are a bit arrogant are you not for thinking that you have the answer by looking at things the RIGHT way. Extremist much?

Geez Dude, so you know everything?
I don't think I made that claim. Care to substantiate your accusation?

You are a bit arrogant are you not for thinking that you have the answer by looking at things the RIGHT way.
Certainty ≠ arrogance; why would you even suggest as much? My stance on matters such as reflexology is informed by actual studies and the easily verifiable opinion of medically qualified professionals. Want an example of arrogance? Glorified foot-rubbers claiming they can actually 1) diagnose and 2) treat any ailments whatsoever. Having your feet rubbed is relaxing and pleasant for sure, but any claim beyond that is utter bull****.

Extremist much?
For realzies? Do you wear a PowerBalance bracelet?

Funny. I wear a magnetized nipple ring to balance my Chi.

I'm just saying (maybe a bit harshly) that one cannot discredit something just because science has alternative answers. I was getting all worked up by the lambasting of alternative medicine. So it might be a crock but science cannot clearly explain why it does not work, just like they cannot explain the magnetic man or bending of spoons with sheer will power.

I accept your explanation but we have to be carefull not to pass judgement to quickly just because of our perceptions.

I can picture that...

Um, yes... that's the very basis upon which one can discredit something. If scientific inquiry has shown something to not work there is nothing left to say on the matter. To be sure there are questions science cannot answer but 'does reflexology/chiropractic/homoeopathy/reiki/<insert quackery here> work?' isn't one of them. That question's been answered. Comprehensively.

I was getting all worked up by the lambasting of alternative medicine.
As you well should, but I suspect you're getting in a tizz for all the wrong reasons. Wanna get worked up about something? Get worked up because the purveyors of woo are keeping millions of people from getting the treatment they actually need, and floating a billions-and-billions strong industry while doing so. Don't get worked up because some dude on the Internet actually calls a spade a dirty ****ing shovel.

So it might be a crock but science cannot clearly explain why it does not work, just like they cannot explain the magnetic man or bending of spoons with sheer will power.
It can, and has. That's why it's a crock. Spoons don't bend through willpower and human magnets would tend to be a lot less magnetic after a liberal application of talcum powder.

I accept your explanation but we have to be carefull not to pass judgement to quickly just because of our perceptions.
My perception has absolutely nothing to do with what can and cannot be shown to be hogwash.

So I take it you're not going to Refelx soon? I must say I went to a Chiro for my lower back and man, it hurts like hell...afterwards. Eventually she put some needles in my back fillet to 'relieve' the spasm by inducing a bigger spasm. Well I made flip-flops on the table. It did not work nothing for my back. So off to the surgeon who said no prob dude, come in next week and I'll fuse the three vertabrates together and your problem is solved, me not being keen on beign cut open and fused then went to the physio. She recommended some stretching excersises and more needles and voila...problem solved and I'm back on the squash court.

So much cheaper than the surgeon wanting to cut me open. Yes, I'm sure his method would have done the job, but the physio worked better.

i have not seen science prove that reflex is a crock, can you supply source?

I really don't think you know what reflexology actually is...:arm:
