Refried beans

Step 1: drain and wash canned beans thoroughly (bean of your choice - red kidney is fine, butter bean is fine, pinto beans are fine)
Step 2: boil in stock of choice until soft
Step 3: drain and mash
Step 4 (optional): fry bean paste
Step 5: season with salt, chilli powder and cumin
Step 6: finally realise that Woolies isn't the bastion of food

Really, it takes less than 5 minutes...

I have never had illusions about number 6.

It is simply close by, therefore convenient.

La Costeña brand canned goods from Mexico are available at Spar. The range Superspars carry is quite big (at least where I am) They have the refried pinto and negros beans plus a bunch of other useful stuff http://www.lacostena.com.mx/frijoles.html
The most common refried ( frijoles refritos) bean brands here are the ubiquitous Old El Paso brand usually sold alongside the overpriced Taco kits aimed at harried school mums who just need to throw in mince then throw the lot at the kids. The other brand is Ortega. That about wraps it up for what's available in SA in the Canned Goods Division.

Woolies did have a mexican section once a year or two ago - the dried spice mixtures were really good but recently I tried to source some and they are no more.- just the oversize wraps remain.

Getting Mexican food in SA is generally hard and expensive. Sometimes you can find some Old el Paso type stuff but is extremely overpriced (as are tortilla's in SA). I love Mexican food so I have learned to make most of that kind of thing from raw ingredients which is a lot cheaper but much more time consuming unfortunately. In America its the cheap stuff (like buying 2 min noodles). Here its a rare and hard to find luxury. Anyways, if you are going to the trouble of making Mexican re-fried beans are about the worst Mexican meal available. Rather make taco's, enchiladas, or Fajitas or something. Heck Nachos are cheap and easy to make.

So you really ought to know better than insulting housewives.

I insulted Sandton housewives, darl. Don't get so defensive about your non-profession. I'm sure you make fantastic tinned fish curries...

What on earth makes you think I am a housewife?

But if insulting me makes you feel better, let it be your medicine.

Housewives don't need nannies. She's a stay-at-home mom.

I work from home abzo. You need to keep up.

What's insulting about being a housewife? The only one insulting them is you by taking it as an insult.

I am not insulted. I am merely straightening your misconception.

Thought your comment regarding being called a housewife an insult was in reply to DJ...

Don't know why I keep thinking you're a stay-at-home mom.
