Hey so I got an

Zyxel EMG3525-T50B V5.50(ABPM.2)R0

and did some research and found out theres an update 5.50(ABPM.6)C0 all cool and well downloaded it tried to install and failed am I surprised not really. So I contacted mweb after spending 50min just to get on call with them and asked if the router is locked to mweb only for updating etc and they said yes. They apparently "updated" it but the firmware version is the exact same its been for the last year. okay no worries but after my contract with them the router is apparently mine will the restrictions still be applicable when im done with them? Its kinda really sly and skelm for them to do so.Should I contact them again?

You have a Fisher Price router, buy a better one.

It's plausible that they have custom firmware on the router - quite a few service providers do that.

What you can do is see if that router model is supported by OpenWRT and flash that.

Alternatively - just get yourself a Cudy WR1300 or X6 - they are cheap and have a ton of features compared to most consumer routers.

Im guessing they do? Idk how reliable this is if they share the same firmware

MWEB always locks their routers.... and they always pretend to unlock it after a while.... they never do.

Telkom is spotty, sometimes they do sometimes they dont. The last one they dropped off out of nowhere (I am with Afrihost) is so locked you cannot even log into it's settings without a telkom account. They dropped so many of them off I started seeing the doorstops at the local charity shop.

Most of the time it's better to just buy your own router and somehow convince your ISP to give you login details if you don't already have em. Most of the time "free" hardware aint actually free.

Dang you might be right thanks for the advice

I can access my routers settings just fine, idk what rambo is going on about
I said telkom locks their routers, not afrihost.... people are reading this wrong. Telscum dropped off the routers to anyone signing up for puredsl regardless of whether or not you are a telscum ISP client.

I think your sentence structure is wrong here tbh, but okay then, I never had a locked router from telkom myself though when I was with them for 8+ years, must of been a recent thing then

Try getting the login details, whether before or after contract ends, and see if you can disable their config. using this method :

Huawei AX3 Router
I have 2 of these modems, both are loaded with the Afrihost firmware. Everytime I reset the modem it loads the afrihost settings.

When logged into the router, Choose System Settings Network and click the TR069 tab to disable it. That will remove the default configuration of the router.

Hopefully it's as simple as that for you as well.
