Reinventing radio

DMX is quite good, I discovered a few good artists on their that would not have been possible on traditional radio.

The closest you are going to get here is Worldspace - nothing like the range of channels, but the same kind of thing technically. Worldspace's mission is somewhat different, and there's more news and educational stuff - at least in the African footprint. XM is a part owner of Worldspace now (still, I think), and that may improve it over time. Worldspace does seem to have no shortage of money - they have billboards next to our highways, and an uplink facility in Jo'burg for the SA channels they carry, but I suspect they're basically a charity in commercial terms.
 
Does anyone know of the status of Digital Radio Mondial (DRM) - basically digital shortwave radio - in SA? Are receivers available here? Is it possible to pick up overseas stations which are using DRM here in SA?
 
I'm just happy my Car's antenna is strong because I only listen to Tuks and UJFM, and switch between the two when the one becomes *** ... the only problem with UJ is they talk way too much ... and usually such BS

since barney simon left 5fm i have not listened to the radio for 4 years now no metal on radio stations equals for the piss poor support for local metal acts:mad::mad::mad:
 
Before I get accused of being too old or simply uncool, I know plenty of people my age and younger who bristle at the dreck on local radio.

Too old? I'm 20, and there's nothing attractive about Highveld or Jacarranda these days. I listen to Rock - any type, from Muse, RHCP, to the Byrds and Beatles. There's no radio station in this country that plays the right combination of music. Its either pure stereotypical, such as Classic FM, or pure POP/RNB and sometimes mixed with Dance/Trance/House in 5FM's case. As usual Rock is left out in this country - be it on TV or radio. The only time I use the FM feature on my radio is if I want to follow sports while on the move, or if I want to play my iPod through an FM Transmitter.
 
The nice thing about all these "discoveries" people make with their fruit company phones (iphones) is that all it has already been done by Nokia.

I have listed to internet radio on my N82 since I got the damn phone. At work I use the company wireless access point and outside I use 3G or even EDGE (on Vodacom). I enjoy a lot of stations from all around the world at bitrates of upto 256kbps.

iphone is so far behind it looks like it is ahead :-)
 
I used to listen to Radio 2000 all the time. It had such a nice mix of music that I could enjoy. Now it's been made over into a middle of the road urban black station, dumping some 300 000 listeners along the way.

I don't switch on the radio any more and I've moved to Internet radio.
