Hey all!

Again, thanks for all the assistance thus far!

So... I have arrived in JHB - wow what a CHANGE!

Please help me with my "Updated" Question:

"Which areas within the RANDBURG area would you suggest as good areas to live in?"

I am currently in Ferndale, and like it here.
I did do a trips out to a few surrounds, but definitely like it here more, so currently leaning toward staying in Ferndale.

But, your thoughts would be appreciated!

My place of employment is here in RANDBURG, hence I am wanting to stay as close as possible...

Thanks!

Try Hurlingham, it's just next door and a decent area.

You will enjoy living in Joburg. Randburg is the perfect area to enjoy everything the city has to offer.

It is important not to panic though. There is always TONS of accommodation up here, and they are always modern, clean, new developments . I have moved up and down to Jozi 3 times over the years. Each time, I go to the same area to the complexes I know, and find a place to rent within a week.

That's more than can be said for cape town, there is literally nothing affordable to rent. There's PLENTY to rent in the 30K+ (but who can afford that ? so those houses sit empty) but between 6K for a bachelor and 19K for a falling down wreck of a house there's not much available at the moment.- at least on the Atlantic seaboard.

Agree, I think Cape Town has lost the plot a bit on rentals. Also been looking for a place just for next year, sold current place and moving to the Dolphin Coast in 2015. Just looking for a smallish decent place in a relatively good area and prices are astounding.

It will almost be cheaper to buy and sell again, even if just for the year.

Exactly! If i could i'd taker shorter lease that i could buy a place sooner. Also a lot of people come up to jhb saying they only staying one year and before they know it 5 years has passed and they still renting. just be mindful of that. If you can buy, buy.. worse case u sell/rent out when you leave.

When searching for a place to rent, do you guys generally just use gumtree? Or what sources would you recommend?
Any complexes in this area which you would recommend?

Bromhof is fine. Where about will you be working? This is a big question to answer when looking at the different areas because of the way the highway is set up.

If you look on a map:

https://maps.google.co.za/maps?q=Br...g+Metropolitan+Municipality,+Gauteng&t=m&z=12

You'll see the highway forms a circle around Johannesburg. When people refer to living inside or outside the ring, they are talking about that circle. If you are working towards the CBD then you'll want to try find a place inside the ring. This is because the majority of your traffic sits getting across the highway in the morning and afternoon. So lets say you go to Bromhof, you'll most likely take Beyers Naude to get into the CBD and there you'll just sit in bumper to bumper traffic till you get past the onramp.

Just some general Joburg things but I've never really been to Cape Town so I'll just state the obvious in a few :p
- Obviously stay away from places like Hillbrow :p
- Drivers here are a lil' more impatient since everyone is in a rush. So generally if the speed limit is X, most people tend to be going between X and X+20 (till everyone slows down for the speed camera).
- Apparently we treat circles differently to people in Cape Town? (So I've been told by a friend who recently moved to CT beginning of the year).
- I'm assuming taxis are the same?
- Always be vigilant late at night when driving home and stopping at robots. (if it's after 12am I normally treat red robots more as a yield sign)

I think the bottom line is yes there's a lot of crime in Jhb but if you're just a lil' vigilant and not walking into dodgy areas then it's really not as bad as some people make it sound :)

Bromhof is good
Not far from the highway (malibongwe and Beyers Naude), not too far from shopping centres (north gate, cresta) and haven't had a robbery in the 5 years I've been in the area

Thanks for the replies :)

I will be working in Oak ave, Randburg.
Coming from Bromhof that is about 5km's.

Thanks for the tips...
Taxis are pretty much the same yes.
So far I haven't had issues with the speed of driving or circles - perhaps lucky.
I don't think I have been in any dodgy areas, definitely not Hillbrow - I will steer clear thanks.

So far, I am quite enjoying JHB :)

1. Blairgowrie,Parkhurst,Randburg,HoneyDew,Cresta

4. Don't look like a newbie, always have your phone in your pocket. Keep notice of your surroundings and learn a martial art. On the real though, I've lived in JHB all my life and I've never been robbed. Seriously keep track of whats going on around you, travel with friends at night if you don't know the area.

My rental got broken into twice in one night on a business trip up there in Parkhurst. First at the restaurant and then they hopped over a wall at the bnb later that night and broke in again.
The police said that it is a crime riddled area when I reported it.

Good choice! i stayed in Bromhof for 2 years, worked on oak street in randburg as well :) Daily commutes ranged from 15 min - 25 min. I love that area, got a keg close by, shops right there, nice quiet area where you can go for a run.

Other areas which have already been mentioned that are good - Ferndale, sundowner, boskruin (next door the bromhof), blairgowrie, craighall park (EXPENSIVE). Personally i would move back to bromhof any time.

Edit : Enjoy the rat race *insert sarcasm here*. Don't get sucked in too much, if you do, Joburg can really bring you down!

Geez, hadn't heard anything and I have a few mates there.
Thanks for letting me know :)
