Remote Shutter

Two fold post :

What do you guys use for a remote shutter?
Do you get something that can lock the button down - ie for hour long exposures?
Apart from battery drainage during a long exposure - is there other wear and tear at all?

Also - have any of you photographyed star trails at all?

For really long exposures you can get a "cheap" manual trigger - most camera stores have them .. even places like Kodak

or .. if you want to have more fun ..

I thought with the cheap ones you have to hold in the button for as long as you want the shutter done?
So I couldn't go for a beer and leave it for 2 hours?

The one at Amaon is - apart from expensive - a little more than I need

There is normally a locked position on those cheap ones... I think. I'm gonna get the Hahnel Giga T Pro soon. Wish there was a way to change camera settings remotely too. Then you would not have to touch the camera when doing multiple exposure landscapes in difficult light.

I use that but the camera has to be tethered to a computer. TBH its pretty much the only use my old netbook saw.

Yeah the locked position is useful. Also - remember to have a very sturdy tripod if you want to do something like star trails. Around 4 minute exposure should get it going - but I haven't had time or location to do a proper many-hour exposure. Will probably need to power camera from a really long extension cable. Not sure how long battery will last.

Use a laptop and the EOS utility. You can set the exposure time from 5sec to 1sec short of 100min.

Is this what you're after or have I completely missed the boat?

I have one of these. Got it for R800 on a special at The Digital Experience in Fourways. They're awesome.
I am ashamed to admit that I bought it nearly a month ago and haven't even opened it yet.

I definitely have to play this weekend.

The 50 f/1.8 is fantastic . . . but the f/1.4 is even better and it will last.

I'd prefer to find one that locks though. I'll speak to the guys at Orms and check what they have!

PS I have a Canon IR remote that I used for Canon SX1 ... wonder if I can press 'open' and 2nd press 'close' - as opposed to holding. I'll try that tonight

I got one off ebay for R500 - can be programmed to take pictures at a specific interval, for a specific interval, starting and ending at a certain time.

Wait till you drop the f/1.8 and it explodes on contact with the floor . . . and thats why my second 50mm was the 1.4

The extra expense nets you a faster, sharper lens, much better build quality, full time manual focus, and a decent focusing ring.

What I'm really looking forward to one day is a 50/85 1.2

You obviously need a tripod and then one of these remote controls. It's cheap and you may already have it.

Then set your camera in B (bulb) mode and use the remote control to time your exposure. One click to start the exposure and then another to stop it. If you want to automated then you'll need something more expensive.
