This morning I went to Renew my Drivers Licence. Here's how it went...
I'm in Cape Town, so went to the GreenPoint Tesing Centre (Gallows Hill), On Saturdays they're open only from 8am - 10am. I got there 07.40am and there was already a small que forming. Although they only opened the doors a little after 8.10am it is better to get there early. When they do open, there's a guy at the door who'll first check what you need to do there and if you have all the necessary documents and id photos. (ID photos are not taken at testing centre, you must have them when you there. Try a photo lab, chemist on the main road).
For drivers licence renewal:
- You must bring your ID document
- Your current Drivers Licence card
- You need atleast 4 black & white photos -- not just 2!
They attach 1 photo to your application form. Then another 2 is attached to the finger print form. The last one, I imagine is used for the issue of a temporary Drivers Licence, which I didnt require because mine had not expired.
Things are much better organized than a few years back.
At Enquiries, you tell them what you there for and give them your id document. They'll start preparing the form and attach one of your id photos to it. You then get told to complete the form (green) and have your eyes tested in Room 5.
Go directly there and complete your form, while waiting. Saves time and your place in the que. The eye test is fairly straighforward.
Once thats done, you get directed to have your fingerprints taken. Your fingerprints are imprinted on another form and two id photos are attached to this. You then have to precariously sign inside a box on either side of this form, while not touching the form itself. Afterwards, they hand back your green application form and tell you to pay at the cashiers.
You go to the cashier, give your application form, they do some processing and then take your payment of R100 and issue a receipt. You'll be notified anything up to 4-6 weeks to collect your new Drivers Licence Card. (if you need a temporary drivers licence, its an extra R40).
This whole process took me 30min, not bad I think.
