Is this right forum for this question?

Looking for a car to meet some picky criteria and I thought it might be interesting to get some ideas.

Automatic (because I am old and lazy)
Comfortable over pot holes ie not low profile tyres
Raised ride height for easy access eg Merc C class is too low but B class is ok
Under R200,000
Easy to replace a single tyre ie not four wheel drive
Better than 6L per 100km on the highway ie probably a diesel
Spare wheel (space saver is ok)
Can fit a chair or small table in ie hatch or wagon
Easy to park ie less than 4.6 metres long
Relatively hassle free ie not a Land Rover
Age not important but under 150,000 kilometres
The less gadgets the better eg sunroof, TPMS, satnav, electric seats
Not too dull and slow

The only car that I think ticks all the boxes (except slow and dull!) is a Renault Duster.
Maybe a Volvo V40CC D3 with 16 inch wheels?
Maybe a Golf and I spend extra on big tyres and a 30mm lift?
Additional problem is I am in PE and automatics and wagons seem unpopular here.
Tks

- Its like you listed the reasons i would not buy a particular car lol...

For changing tyres just get a road-side assist. You can find a coffee shop and sip espresso while they fix it.

Given your list by the way:
- Volvo V40cc - while i love Volvo and drive one, if its out of plan you may struggle with parts prices. You would need to have a good warranty in place.
- Golf is a good car, and some of them had very high profile tyres they could take a good knocking. Don't know about their diesel reliability, the 2 friends i knew with diesels both blew turbos before 100k.

I would be inclined to say a BMW 120d (320 is quite low) but it is also a bit low and its tyres slightly low profile. Your price range is also in the Haval used territory if you don't mind venturing that way. Or go Suzuki but you won't get a punch from their engines. Ticks your other boxes though.

Well here is your problem. If you want something "bigger" and higher of the ground with low fuel consumption, you looking at diesel. Now for your budget you going to look at an older higher mileage diesel. And if a diesel break you going to spend big money, even if its not the engine, just injectors, turbo etc is normally big money.

Now diesels can be very reliable especially if you get a well-know brand, VW, Toyota, Merc, Audi. BMW etc. But then these brands can cost you big money for just small repairs, service and especially major services.

So sometimes when buying "older" cars that you plan to keep for long its cheaper to buy a bulletproof petrol engine and live with the bit higher fuel consumption and in case something goes wrong it is not a train smash to fix

Mitsubishi asx is my vote, though you won't find a diesel and can expect around 7-8l/100km open road driving..

Thanks for the replies guys.
I agree R200k is not a lot in 2024.
Pity we don't get 2WD Q3 here.
I hate depreciation so much that I even considered Mercedes W123 or S124 TD wagon but could not find any.

Mitsubishi asx over 6L per 100km
Hyundai Tucson early ones use over 6L per 100km, later ones over R200k
Mazda cx5 over 6L per 100km. over R200k
Honda BRV don’t like feel of CVT but worth consideration
Suzuki Ignis & Swift cute town cars but wheels are a bit small and the automatic gearshift woefully slow
Honda Jazz sport over R200k
BMW 1 series no spare wheel
BWM 220d over R200k. Do they have a spare wheel?

You are that picky and you only have R200k to spend, ain’t going to happen.
And on top of all that you expect this vehicle to get under 6L/100km and it mustn’t be a little hobbit car.

At some point you are going to have to up your budget or compromise on your unreasonable fuel consumption requirement for your budget and vehicle size..

Crticism accepted.
I believe that a Renault Duster can meet my criteria.
And perhaps a Mercedes A180 Cdi (W169)

From all reports the Duster DCI is a great car with good fuel economy, there are plenty to choose from around the R200k mark and it’s versatile. I’d say it’s a no brainer choice over the Mercedes

X1, run out model of the prior shape, some variation of 18d or 20d. Order the spacesaver as BMW HQ are 30%ers and haven't worked out that runflats don't work on ANC roads and BMW on Call have ceased to be useful. XC40 a potential alternate with good ride and reliability.

Ignore everything neoprawn says about cars.
