"Reserve" tank

I get banned and unbanned, a comet brushes past the sun, Paul Walker dies and there's still no pic of this ****ing reserve tank?!

I think in e30 BMWs there is a seperate reserve tank behind the back seat, infact I am certain there is a seperate reserve tank behind the seat.

I stripped my boot liner so I thought id share this in Saturns defense.

My E30 auxiliary fuel tank. 2 tanks under the car... 20/25L on either side of the driveshaft... and this 20L behind the backseat backrest.

Cool, but how did you get a dent in yours?

Banged my head against it in anguish and anger. 1. Because I realised we had to admit that Saturz was not only right about the historical significance of the Delta Motor Corporation of South Africa Opel Monza 160i GSI Car of the Year 1991, but also this secondary/tertiary tank.

And

2. I wanted to pop the ski hatch to allow more bass from my woofer to enter the cabin and found this in my way.

3. The real answer is that I think thats the shape of the thing.

There is an access cover over it which is undamaged. So either that tank was replaced somewhere along the line...or the access cover was replaced after the damage.

lols @ this thread.

Glad to see saturnz vindicated...mostly because its the most entertaining outcome.

Hehe.

Now we need a detailed discussion on the differences, if any, between a reserve tank, an auxiliary tank, a secondary task, a supplementary tank, and so on... :D

Lets be clear...its by no means a reserve. That tank empties out first. Its basically an overflow type tank. Causes the last 20 litres to go in just over 15 minutes thanks to annoying airlocks in the feed pipes.

Also annoying because it puts my full tank cost over a clip.

According to the "E30 Restoration Bible" all south african cars were fitted with this tank...

Also noted that only the 333i had the 2 tanks under the car... the others all had a drop down single tank connected on top with a balast tube in the bottom.

Okay to summarize

1. saturnz said there was a extra tank behind the seat. Lots of people said no such thing existed and there is only one tank on the BMW

2. Then there was the debate on what constitutes two tanks and one tank.

3. A picture was provided that showed an additional tank is indeed found on the car.

4. Now we are debating what constitutes a reserve tank vs a secondary tank.

And there has been no acknowledgement that certain people were quite wrong.

Only ten months late.

Depends entirely on the model of BMW...

I will state it again, I stripped 2 E30's when I owned them, and neither had these second tanks... it was not standard in every single model in this country from my knowledge. May have been standard in the upper end of the range, but the 316's and 318's it wasn't standard.

This is a 318i 1985 base model.uploadfromtaptalk1409585381612.jpg

Also my 1985 user manual states all models this year had 75L capacity like mine

How did I only stumble onto this now... Remember back in the Old SA when Shops was closed on Sundays and so on... People where not allowed to transport fuel. I think that could be the reason for these "additional tanks" More fuel capacity maybe?

When I read "reserve" I think of a bike where you have to switch to the reserve when then main is empty. Also has a mate that has an extra tank fitted to the back of his 4x4. When the main is empty he has to put on a switch to use the second tank. That I see as a reserve tank. Any extra tanks I suppose would just increase capacity if there is no "switch" between the tanks?

This is what still bothers me:

As per your figures you get a total fuel capacity of 65-litres while every single spec sheet I find says the E30 had a total fuel capacity of 55-litres.
