Hi guys,

My friend has given me her Apple iPad 1st generation I think 16GB Model: A1430 and asked me to reset the damn thing.

It boots up saying

iPad is disabled
connect to iTunes

I've watched various YouTube videos and I just can't get this damn thing into recovery mode or whatever to reset it completely.

When connecting to iTunes on the PC, it comes up with

iTunes could not connect to the iPad "name of ipad" because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPad before it can be used with iTunes.

If only it allowed me, because then she could give me some possible codes to try.

Any advice?

Obsolecence by design. Apple is dodgy AF.

My FIL is still using the first gen iPad I gave him two years ago. How does that fit in with your "Obsolecence by design" theory.

@OP - have you tried resetting it using her computer?

Did she register it for find my iphone on icloud? If so she might be able to remotely wipe it or deregister it.

You need to download the software for the device...

https://ipsw.me/#!/version

Persist with trying to get it into recovery mode. The screen will be blank in recovery mode. Actually DFU mode. With iTunes open on your pc and the iPad connected to the pc listen for the audible ques that that the device is recognized and in recovery mode. Once established shift+restore and point to the ipsw file you downloaded earlier. I take it you using windows?

She hasn't used the device in 2 years - she can't even remember the pass code but what she does remember is, she knew what the pass code was, entered it a few times, no issue, came back and tried to use it and bam, didn't take it anymore - she suspects someone muddled with it.

Hi, yes. Windows 10 to be exact.

I watched so many YouTube videos yesterday trying to get this device into DFU mode or recovery mode and nothing worked - it's not like I haven't done this sorta thing before on other devices.
The only thing that showed signs of working was pushing the "home" button and "power" button together (once device was off) the Apple logo would appear, then disappear then appear and would keep doing this - that's the only thing that showed signs of doing something but it just kept doing that.
I'm willing to take it to someone here in CPT and ask them to do it for me, but not if they going to charge and arm and a leg - so if anyone knows of anyone, point them in my direction.

She doesn't mind the device being reset/reformatted etc.

Mmmm, wonder if the home button is busted?

I can't test it anyway because I can't get into the iPad to do anything.
It however, doesn't 'feel' busted to me.
The iPad is in good condition bar a few scratches here and there from obvious use.

The cable that I have with the unit takes FOREVER to charge the iPad - it's not in great condition, but having said that, each time it powers on, iTunes gives me the messages that it is connected etc so must be working.

So you've successfully put an iDevice in DFU mode before? I'm not being flippant. It's just that it is seriously confusing to do if you haven't done it before because they are absolutely no visual cues that the device is in DFU mode. In fact a blank screen is probably the only indication and the audible message from iTunes with a pop up 'device in recovery mode detected'.

From what I've seen on YouTube - the messages I'm supposed to get on iTunes is what I'm looking for.

I only always get this message:

iTunes could not connect to the iPad "name of ipad" because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPad before it can be used with iTunes.

And I never see the cable with the iTunes logo, it shows me the Apple logo, then boots into the main screen where I see:

iPad is disabled
connect to iTunes

I connected to her account on iTunes, I even "authorized this computer" - I just can't get into this damn iPad.

Mmmmm, should be blank screen all the time until you actually restore. No iTunes logo, Apple logo or any logo's. The only way to get an iPad OUT of DFU mode is to press and hold power and home button simultaneously for 10 seconds. Hard reboot basically...

Okay, just so we on the same page. Connect the iPad to your Windows PC, open iTunes, power down the iPad by pressing and holding the power button for 3-4 seconds and slide to power off.

Then, once fully powered down, press and hold the power button and count to 3, then continue holding the power button and press the home button and continue counting from 3 to 13, then release the power button but continue holding the home button. WAIT for iTunes to give the audible cue that it's detected a connected device. Once you hear it the pop message should appear soon after and at this stage you can stop pressing the home button...

I'm going to do this again tonight - I'm tempted to stream it just for you. :D Haha.

Lol, DFU mode is the go to state when an iDevice is not performing. If the device won't allow you to enter DFU mode I suspect a hardware fault.

i've just been through this. connect cable to computer that has itunes, press home and lock button - KEEP HOLDING the buttons in until you get the recovery screen - the device will restart - keep holding the buttons in!!!!! That's the mistake i made.

Then it will most probably download the latest IOS (its first generation so not sure what its going to do)
i downloaded the ios manually as it itunes was not saving it - then you must copy it to the correct location

Then your restore will work

had something like this once before on Ipad air 2nd generation,

imo apples security can only be bypassed by istore people, and only with a ORIGINAL invoice to prove you didn't steal it.

had mountains of Ipads with this same issue, our company simply sent them to recycling as it was too much of a bother to try remove the itunes lock.

just another reason I never liked ipads.

I have the "lock switch" (left to right) and "volume" buttons as well as the "power" button and "home" key.

I'll actually post pictures of said unit tonight.

yes so you press the power button and home key together - keep holding it in until it restarts and you see a pic of a cable going into the device - that is the restore screen - only then you let go...
