My mom's been teaching for 30+ years. For about 8 months she was working without a salary and the governing body took whatever money they had and shared it between the 5 teachers incl. my mom who weren't being paid by the Dept of Ed due to some discrepancy on their "system".

My mom even went to Bisho to find her file...and was taken to a room filled with random papers and files spread across the floor. It was an absolute mess. Finally she got her salary reinstated, with no backpay.

She also taught in Soweto during the apartheid years where they drove to the local police station every morning and were taken to schools in Kaspers to teach to the locals. She still says those days were less stressful than the crap they deal with now. I think next year she's out. She's also tutoring math and Afrikaans privately to private school kids and it seems to be doing wonders for their results. Probably better just doing this full time.

Well, we can only assume it will be English. No need for any other language, because when the anc's cronies from China, Palestine, Russia, etc., lands here they will not be able to communicate. So, English it will be, unless they surprise us with Mandarin or Russian.

I totally get what she is going through and my heart bleeds for her!

Here, a few businessmen clubbed together and hired 4 teachers who does home schooling from different locations. They have about 65 children at this point in time. They take care of everything. They arrange the examinations that need be taken at dedicated locations, etc. They are doing much better now than what they did before. Also, their group of children surpassed the top 10 learners in our school at last years final examination!!

This is the future for those still interested in either getting education in your own language or teach in your own language.

They already did and closed the teachers colleges. The result is that they have no decent teachers left and the older ones that still had the knowledge are retiring now or have left for other jobs.

Culture is worth learning from (learn from your or in this case, your ancestors mistakes) but only in the sense of it being a part of history is it worth protecting.

Don't come with that minority crap. The Afrikaans schools are already full taking in all the learners they can. These ****ers just want to force them over to English or get them to take on English learners at the expense of Afrikaans learners.

The situation in many/most majority Afrikaans schools is this.
White Afrikaans ---> mother tongue tuition ----> everyone in the class benefits
White English and blacks in one class with ----> English tuition (guess who benefits)
You then have a problem with not enough blacks in a grade to justify another classroom +++ Where will we find another classroom anyway?

Universities might sit with a similar problem in terms of logistics.
To address the problem of mother tongue tuition in schools and universities, first look at what needs to be in place for it to be successful and work from there. Does the numbers justify mother tongue education?

And i have not even highlighted the fact of 11 official languages

English is the only rational choice for tuition. In recent years, much content has been technical (American). The future looks technical. The majority of literature is in English. Conferences. Mathematics and music have English groundings. Aviation standard. English is a mainly technical language but is fair at other subjects. For eg. It’s OK with philosophy although German would probably be better. It is not obsessed with language ‘purity’ and incorporates (and mispronounces) terms and concepts from other languages. As the best all-round compromise, English excels.

We already have a working system. The only reason they want to change it is because they can't let go of their hangups about the past and not because it would be somehow better. Mother tongue education is superior irrespective of what language the technical stuff is in. Terms are easy to learn afterwards but it's not as easy to learn in a language you can't properly understand.
 
My 3 kids went to Afrikaans schools tutored by Afrikaans teachers.
They attended UJ where they obtained honours degrees. They attended lectures in Afrikaans but sat the exams writing in English. When I queried this they told me it was a waste of time as their books were in English and they did not want to spend time translating.
 
Anyhow, their Afrikaans school were full of souties and some blacks kids.
So their culture were quite mixed.
Ditto for varsity.
So much for lily white education institutions.
Now back to all the political hogwash being sprouted
The township schools are running empty as black people regard their education as inferior. Even their principals send their kids to white schools lol. So all the kids get send to white schools aka model C schools.
My wife is a teacher and we see how undisciplined this lot is. Once a week kids with demerits sit after school for punishment and invariably they are all black. So thats another challenge. I just hope that the culture will (eventually) rub off them.
And please don't shoot down the Zimbabwe systems. Many of our most senior people have degrees from there and they are quite ok in my opinion.
Btw I'm in coal mining. And my young black (degreed) colleagues are quite ok as well in my opinion. And they feel the same as me about our country.
I also have the most beautiful young granddaughter who is not yet two. I am worried about her future as well but have put enough money into an investment for her future education (hold thumbs as I won't be around).
So there are and always will be different opinions for everything.
Shall we now start one on single malt whiskey vs Johnny Walker Black / Blue or whateva.
