Rio 2016 Olympics Sevens

Glad Kiwis are out. Oz has become our 7's bogey team, so great result.

And we have become Fiji's bogey team lately.....

But knowing the Blitzbokke or is it the BlitzProteas? ( no sign of a Bok anywhere on our rather nice strip)...we will loose against the Poms.

Oops.....my prediction came true, purely based on the serious BMT issues with this team.

I can't remember when last I was as happy as watching GBR get destroyed by Fiji. GBR were lucky to make it our of the QF and SF.

We played bad in semis. Wasted many opportunities to score and get into the final. At least we got bronze.

Senatla: Hougaard offered me his medal

Speaking to Sport24 after the medal ceremony, Senatla was taking it all very well and he revealed that Hougaard had offered him his medal.

"It's only fair. If the other guys come in it means that my name is taken off the list and they have to be there," he said.

"Hougie (Hougaard) wanted to give it to me ... I was like 'No, no ... you keep it. Your name is on the list.'

"He's a very good guy and he wanted to give it to me. It's a procedure so I only think it's right. It doesn't matter how much time I got or how much time he played ... at the end of the day that's how it went."

Senatla said the team succeeding was more important than anything else.

"It's not really about me at the end of the day, it's about the team. And as long as the team got bronze I'm happy," he said.

"It was great to be a part of the moment even though I didn't get to stand on the podium.

"People don't realise how much we gave for this. I know that a bronze medal is not ideal for us because of the standards we have, but to stand on the podium and be one of the top three teams is quite an achievement.

"To see my brothers that I worked so hard with throughout the whole year get a medal on the podium was priceless for me and such a proud moment. I felt like I was with them there in spirit."

Senatla has fractured his wrist and will be out for around two months.

After watching their first game I backed them for the gold. Barring injuries nobody was up to their standard for this competition.

To mention that Dakuwaqa is partially blind, he was a golden try scorer. The nation will be proud. The Blitzbokke should had beaten Great Britain, thanks to errors we had to settle with the bronze, instead we could had taken the silver (maybe, like marginally, gold).

It was great to see how spirit the sevens ‘team’ event was at the Rio Olympics, it was greatly supported by the participants and by the supporters, and the television numbers are really good. The attendance was low, but that was to be expected as a newly introduced Olympic sports code. I doubt that the union rugby event will be scrapped as it will be even more popular with the 2020 Summer Olympics, we may also see them include more teams on the IOC’s request.

The big winner here is World Rugby.

Useless sidebar trivia:

Which country is the reigning Olympic gold medal holder in the 15-man version of the game?

The USA. Twice: 1920 Antwerp, and 1924 Paris. Rugby Union was dropped as an Olympic sport in 1925.
Kinda like France and Cricket.
