RIP Charlie Kirk

I get the sensitivities around race past injustice and discrimination make these topics tricky, and I get why people call out language that hits those nerves.

Sensitivity is not an excuse for murder, it is not an excuse to kill a defenseless woman on public transport. It is bullshit. I think once the coffin is in the ground and once people had time to reflect, there is going to be hell to pay. If my money was invested in legacy media and social media. I would liquidate faster then any laxative. I think Trump is going to introduce a bill that keep them responsible and then they are going to lose ****ing billions in lawsuits. Freedom of speech died with this man, make no ****ing mistake about that.

Could keep going, the above one had an interesting few breakdowns between number of fatalities per political "attack" and other stats, like weapon of choice etc

You're right,he was an Absolute saint

Wait,no not really
I didn't see this one earlier... :X3:

There is no separation of church and state. It’s a fabrication, it’s a fiction, it’s not in the constitution. It’s made up by secular humanists.

For someone who was so big on the 2nd amendment he clearly didn't read the 1st one.

What point are you trying to make here? Because figure 2 is clear that there are far more victims of homicide on the right. So is the right killing the right over ideology? Figure 1 doesn't exactly state who the aggressor is in these "incidents"...

Fair point, but would there be a 25% margin of error? I've seen other similar (and worse) spreads from other studies. I actually took one that was a bit lighter

Not as picturey though so the rightwing mudbrains won't like it as much
I am not fan of right wingers at all but if I look at UK, "right wingers" are getting prosecuted & jailed for tweets & shouting 'I love bacon' type of silly things. I wonder if similar thing is happening in US as well.

Some might. But I don't recall recent political assassinations before Trump. I don't recall as-significant political protests before Trump. I don't recall the temperature & intolerance on both sides being raised to this degree, before Trump. To me, when you say "some might", I have to agree, but those would have been on the more-extremist side of the bell curve, not to the centre of it.

Just to be clear, when I say "before Trump" I am specifically referring to his second term. Even in his first term, things were far more "moderated" than it is now.
Ok but is it also not fair to say that perhaps things got crazy since Trump's first term ?

UK is its own little drama, but the US is swiftly sliding to that in the opposite direction. Blacklisting people for life for "Joking about Kirk's death" and Visa cancellations for criticizing Turnip seems to not be Freedom-of-speechy

Was a man in the uk arrested for saying he loves bacon or is there more to the story?
What Actually Happened
  • The Incident: In August 2023, a 36-year-old man named Darren Brady was arrested in Dorset, England, during a pro-Palestine protest in Bournemouth. He was holding a placard that read "Hamas are terrorists" and reportedly made a verbal comment along the lines of "I love bacon" while pointing it toward a group of Muslim protesters (many of whom follow Islamic dietary laws prohibiting pork, including bacon).
  • The Arrest: He was detained under Section 4A of the Public Order Act 1986 for "using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behavior with intent to cause a person harassment, alarm, or distress." Police classified it as a potential "hate incident" due to the context of the protest and the perceived targeting of a protected group (based on religion). He was held for several hours, interviewed, and then released without charge.
  • Outcome: No further action was taken against him. Dorset Police later clarified that the arrest was for the overall behavior at the protest, not just the bacon comment, and they emphasized it was to "prevent a breach of the peace" amid rising tensions in the area following the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Why It Went Viral
  • The story gained traction on social media (e.g., X/Twitter and TikTok) through bodycam footage released by the police, which showed the arrest and the man's exchange with officers. Some posts exaggerated it as "arrested for loving bacon," framing it as an example of overreach in "woke" policing or free speech suppression in the UK.
  • Critics, including free speech advocates and politicians like former Home Secretary Suella Braverman, condemned the arrest as disproportionate, arguing it stifled legitimate expression. Supporters of the police action pointed to the inflammatory context of the protest.
Broader Context
  • UK law allows arrests for speech or actions that could incite hatred or distress, especially in heated public settings like protests. Similar incidents have occurred, such as arrests for anti-Semitic or Islamophobic chants.
  • This wasn't an isolated case; it reflects ongoing debates about hate speech laws in the UK, particularly post-October 2023 amid global protests.

Ok but is it also not fair to say that perhaps things got crazy since Trump's first term ?

Maybe, but it was far more moderated than it is now.

By way of emoji-planation:

Trump's first term -

Trump's second term -

Would a report, stating only the facts with no opinion or attempt at emotion, still be propaganda?
Yes as there is no way the reporter or presenter can hide their personal opinion from the viewer, it would bleed through, through inclination, tone and body language. Subtle influence is still influence.....even an AI voice wouldn't be immune, since it is subject to the data that created it and therefore biased towards the choices made for it's training data.

Stating "only facts" (unless arrived by the consumer themselves through testing....which no-one will do in every case let's be honest) in itself suffers from choices made while pursuing the objective.

So ultimately all news are biased and therefore a form of propaganda.

Don't think it's about the speech. They can say what they want, but one can understand something about their characters from their actions. If someone hates what a country stands for, would it be a great idea to reconsider not letting them come to it? When your enemy stands at the door knocking, do you let him in? Granted, Charlie was special in that he engaged with those with opposing views all the time, was respectful, and invited dissenting views and debate.
Perhaps this is about substance over form.

I agree its a bad day for free speech but I don't think its died. So many are using this as a rallying point for their opinions.
