Roadblock and speed trap warnings using tech

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter where the cops in SA have road blocks or traps - they're out to make money, either through fines, or personal riches (corruption) - that is just reality.

South African's don't have the back bone to do anything about it - one or two won't do the trick.

It kinda does actually. It's about discretion. Using your common sense. We all know some laws are stupid or unnecessary or even dangerous, sometimes. We're not machines, we don't have to just blindly follow them.

Not quite - my common sense is different to yours, and everyone's common sense is different to an 18yr old who just got his license and thinks he's invincible on a Friday night... hence the reason for a law that applies to all.

Tshwane metro was complaining the other day that AARTO is costing them revenue because they are having problems issueing AARTO compliant fines...

Just shows you, they just see fines (aka "road safety") as a revenue stream...

I don't pay mine until I receive a summons - doing well so far, these days I only receive a first notice, and then nothing, later on payfines it says "Withdrawn"

A service has been provided to the public and if you want it then use it. If not do not judge others for using it.

In terms of law there is nothing against informing someone about such.

I dont know how they can do that, all I need to say is I knew the person, or my hand slipped on the stalk? I mean the proving methods would cost a LOT of money and forensics is just not worth it.

Its like the radar/laser detectors on cars - they're not illegal - but the cops will make your life difficult, even if 'only' by charging you with "defeating the ends of justice"

Their chief concern is making money.

Otherwise they could have installed permanent cameras everywhere
that costs way less than those laser cameras.

And driving 70 in a 60 zone is NOT speeding.

I use Trapster on my phone - the app is amazing. With GPS enabled, one gets live voice alerts whenever one gets near a camera/usual hiding spot/roadblock

I don't see why it would be illegal. You can't stop people from talking to each other.

If you follow that line of thinking, they'd have to arrest/fine everybody who phones a friend to say there's a roadblock here, slow down.

I have no problem with this for speeding. But for roadblocks I agree, it must be illegal, as it will keep the bad people away from the roadblocks.

Ok, so your car gets stolen.

2 days later they drive on a road with a roadblock - they were supposed to get caught as the car is reported stolen....but now they don't because they AVOIDED the roadblock - a get out of jail free card.

do you really want them to have access to this kind of information?

...and that's not even talking about keeping the drunk drivers on the road for longer, as they too know where NOT to drive.

what's next, sms'ing drug dealers when the cops plan on raiding them?

This is unfortunately the stupidity of some people. They complain about crime but do not want any measures that are implemented to combat it to affect them. We have heard this with the implementation of RICA, this service, the use of CCTV cameras etc etc.

You could argue a speed trap around a bend on a downhill in a 60 zone isn't justice
