Well, we have all discussed this already - potholes the size of small asteroid craters in Midrand for example.

Now, it appears it is indeed a crisis of gigantic proportions in the making.

DA transport spokesperson, Stuart Farrow, said South Africa was facing a backlog of repairs and maintenance work of up to R200-billion to bring South African roads up to international standards.

Don't like the DA? This is still bad enough:
This figure was based on calculations stemming from a presentation by the South African National Road Agency Limited's (Sanral), said Farrow, who said that Transport Minister Jeff Radebe had previously said South Africa was facing a backlog of more than R50-billion.

The roads arent failing!

As Thabo said, the roads are failing 'cos more people have cars. This is positive, and its due to the good economic growth.

More people have cars,true.
Does it follow then, that more should be spent on maintaining roads?

The same economic growth will come to a standstill as soon as we lose our tarred roads

In my area they are unfortunately failing.

He was joking.
:D

This is exactly my point...In a previous thread i asked how it was possable for SA to have a 5.4% GROWTH...If you look at these stastistics, it's impossable, unless they calculate Profit as Income minus "no expenditure" = growth
Its the same as if i had R1000 000 worth of stock, sell the whole lot without replacing, and say THATS my profit...

The tax payers who pay for those roads are also leaving. This is a catch 22 situation...

The problem is that the guavamint is measuring "growth" as "new jobs" and "new business".
This is "fake" growth - as it has no support in terms of infrastructure.

I find if fascinating to watch a country falling into pieces . The only problem is that I am in it.

Geez, What got to You? You became fairly negative over time? nearly like Moederloos. (He must maybe change that to Moedeloos)

I traveled those roads close to Kyalami Yesterday, I must say I am appalled at the condition of those roads. At some places you had to near stop and take a diversion on the pavement (all sand and dried mud corrugations already) to miss the potholes (4-5 meter stretch) in the tar road. I got annoyed for someone breaking hard on a tar road in front of me on a clear stretch of road with no traffic, that was until I saw what he was braking for.

What is one's annual license renewal fee used for? I thought it was for maintaining infrastructure used by motorists IE. roads. If there more vehicle owners than shouldn't there be more money available for maintenance?
