Last night my place was broken into. Stole my new PC, monitor, tv, wallet etc etc. Even the external drives that I've used to backup work personal information etc etc. I am so stupid it's unreal.

Anyway I want to change my Gmail password just in case but trying to find where to do that on the mobile version of the site is proving difficult. Can someone point me in the right direction. See all sorts of privacy things I can change but no set new password.

Sigh.

gmail will show you in last activity and time with IP used so you could try to use that to as a longshot find out where your pc is?

They jumped over a wall. Got through an outside door that wasn't in good shape and managed to unlock the main slide door to the cottage.

I assume they just wipe the drives but am a little worried that my misery isn't finished.

Also had a major burglary several weeks ago. Still wake up feeling bad about everything that was taken and what I should have done to prevent it. Most of the computer equipment that was stolen was from Japan so I doubt they will even have the skills to reinstall English software on it. Some of the hard drives are 110V units so I wouldn't be surprised if they destroy it by plugging it in and it all ends up in a landfill somewhere.

That's a lot of volts for a hard drive

Why do you keep your backups by your PC?

Because I'm a lazy idiot. Lesson learned and then some.

Question - will my legit copy of win 8 work on a new system? How many can I install it on?

I assuming he's talking about the PSU :D Odd that it isn't switching though.

It was an early Japanese market Buffalo 500GB hard drive. The power supply is built into the drive i.e. no external power pack and it has a power cord with a two pin Japanese plug coming out of the drive. There was no indication on the back of the drive that it could accept 100~240V so I always assumed that it was a 110V model but it might work at 240V using a flat to round adapter. They also stole a Japanese mini Hifi which is a 110V unit together with portable cassette players, mini disc players, mp3 players, CD players - most of which had 110V chargers/power packs etc. If you can't read Japanese most of the audio equipment will be nearly useless as all the displays/menus and software are only in Japanese. It's infuriating to imagine how they are going to destroy all of this stuff though! My wife also had a number of expensive Japanese/English electronic dictionaries which they also stole which would be of no use and have no resale value. I have to wonder if these robberies are really about stealing items of value or to cause the victims as much pain as possible!

One at a time. It works just like Windows 7 and XP. If Windows detects you've installed it before, it will give you a number to call. The computer at the other end will give you an insanely long sequence of numbers to type into the dialog and voila! Activated again.

Shame buddy, I feel you.

That gives me an idea. Is there software that simply silently connects to an online service which records your IP, so that you can possibly track it by IP like that?

This is why I love either Win 7 Ultimate or Linux, as you get encryption before the OS loads. I usually also encrypt my back-ups and keep them in different places. Usuall at least two sets of backups.

At least you were not assaulted or worse. I am sorry for your losses; have been a victim quite a few times, was kidnapped three times - once by whites, once by blacks and once by Polynesians. Dunno who to hate now, too many options LOL.

They can carry all my stuff away as long as I have back-ups. All our photo's, of days when our children were young, things like that were taken. We have no way of getting it back. That's why all now gets stored electronically and encrypted, also kept away from each other. All I still need to do is to get a Milleniata drive.

My son and I have made a few citizen's arrests over the past few years. Where we live, was unsafe to walk outside in broad daylight. As a community, we fought back and now, a decade later, it is safe to be out on the street, even alone, any time, day or night. Many tourists come from the lekker long party street and walk the entire distance to the beachfront holiday apartments - 5km or so. We know the street people called ''bergies'' and not even they tolerate others coming in to do crime. We have a MEC called Dan Plato, a Premier named Helen, a Mayor called Patricia and a city security boss called JP Smith. All people known to act decisively and we support them every inch of the way.
