Good day forum readers,

Last week Thursday upon return from the office, I shockingly discovered that my flat had been broken into.
They stole everything they could get there hands on that was of value, including my modem and my router.

On the weekend I decided to buy a second hand Netgear 2200 GN modem+router.
Got home, and discovered that when stealing the modem and the router they ripped out the connection on the wall.

Can someone tell me if I can fix this myself and what I would need.
I went to the MICA this afternoon and bout a wall jack. In there you have 4 cables (Red, yellow, green and black)
The Telkom cord has 4 cables but with different colors (Orange, Blue, Brown and Green)

No idea how to continue, anyone any ideas?

Also, I cant remember if I ever use a filter on my line. Do I need one? I only use the Telkom line for ADSL. Not for voice/phone calls.

Looking forward to a reply for the experts here.

You don't need a filter unless you want to connect a phone to the line.

My telkom cables are also blue and white, I do know they only use 2 cables per line, these would be the inner ones on the connector. Have no idea which goes on which side though.

So no white, any idea how to continue?

The Jack that it needs to be connected to also has 4 connecting points (Red, yellow, green and black)

My wall jack uses the green and yellow wires, black and red are unconnected. The pins involved on the RJ11 are the two center ones. If the cable out of the wall is flat, try the middle set of conductors first. If they are two twisted pairs, try the one with a blue wire first. If unsuccessfuly, try the others. If you have a multimeter available, test for voltage across the pairs, should be in the 90V range. If you can get your hands on a phone, test for dial tone.

I am busy reading trough the Frikkenator's suggestions. I did read trough them this morning though.

@bruce_the_loon, cable is round, so not flat, not sure how to determine pairs. Also no multi meter available.

Guys, will my ADSL Still work once I can confirm I get a dial tone?

If you strip back the insulation about 30mm, you should find the conductors in twisted pairs. If not, ask a neighbour if you look inside their socket and see how that is wired.

Your only other option would be to plug the ADSL router into the jack and then touch pairs to the screws. The correct pair should light up the ADSL indicator LED. You (shouldn't) can't blow the router.

The accurate way to determine which pair is the line is to measure the voltage with a multimeter. A Telkom line measures between 48 and 54 volts DC.

Do it like this:

Strip back the insulation on all the conductors
See which pair give you the voltage above (you will not get a shock since the current is extremely feeble)
When you have the correct pair, connect this to the telco socket that leads to the female RJ-11 connector
Plug in a phone and check you have dial tone and can dial out
Connect a POTS filter to the socket
The red (or ADSL) socket goes to the router
The green (or phone socket) goes to the phone

Screw the socket to the wall or baseboard so it looks neat

Last time a Telkom techy was at my house, it was around 20V....

A regular Telkom line is 48-52 VDC
An ISDN line gives you about 100 volts
A shared service will be between 20 and 35 volts
Many devices like alarm panels will not detect a line if the voltage drops below 35 VDC

Got the DSL light on the modem working, it is solid green.
The strange thing is that the Internet light goes solid red before the DSL light is solid green.

So I am thinking wiring is still wrong.

Try swap the two wires around. Also, have you punched your adsl info into the router? If you don't have the PPPOE credentials in, you'll get a DSL connection, but no internet :)

On Netgear routers (DGN2000 at least) the internet icon remains red until a connection with the ISP is made ie after DSL sync.
Remains red if you use bridge mode.

Is that why and ISDN line gives you such a nasty shock when stripping it with your teeth?

So I followed the cable to where its coming from, found a box, very old and dirty, seems that only two cables are connected (Blue and Orange)

How should that be connected to the telephone jack?

Plug cables into phone randomely till you get a tone.

Those two should be connected to the center pins on the socket as discussed earlier. You had the DSL light green, which means it had signal and has negotiated the ADSL link, so just check the parameters in the modem before going on. Username and password may be incorrect.
