Rocketnet - feedback?

Hi Ronald

Here are some of the tests that we did this evening after 19:00 on our 100Mbps line on Vumatel. As you can see it is still quite pathetic. This problem was not present in the first month, and started roughly 2 weeks ago.

We also tested from different locations on the Vumatel/RocketNet network, and confirmed that the problem is not specific to our connection.

Can you please address the issue urgently as it is not acceptable to only get 10% of a service that we are paying full price for. As far as we are concerned it appears that no network upgrades have been done, and you are now limiting speeds because you have run out of bandwidth.

Hmm... This does not bode well. I've just placed an order for 100/100 on tthe same Vum/Rock combo and those speeds do look rather pathetic.

That's similar to what I get with my Cool Ideas 100Mbps line to London (okay my download is almost double), think it's a general capacity to Europe issue and not particularly ISP related...

Hey there

Can you run a Speedtest to a local Cape Town server and post the result.

The issue with your international tests is that it takes longer to reach full line speed and your test doesn’t run for long enough to get to the full speed due to TCP Window size.

Thanks for this Ryan, this is mainly due to TCP window scaling and that the test doesn’t run for long enough to reach full speed. If you are familiar with iperf speed testing we could give you some servers to test to

This test looks great, your latency is 144ms which is amazing to London, remember your speeds need to generate enough data for a long enough period to get to the full 100Mbps, have you tried using the Speedtest.net app on your phone and see if your results are better, I get a very different result.

Hi Ronald.

If you look at the speed of me graphs you will see around the 10th I was getting expected speeds to Europe without any issue.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but categorically it's been stated by your support that "using wireless is not accurate and you should use a cabled connection" yet you propose using a cell phone?

why then after 7 does the download speeds drop to 1mbps is this also caused by the it takes longer to reach full line speeds?
it looks more like throtteling or not enough bandwidth as we have seen this before with certain isps
until 10 days ago we did not have this problems specially the after 7pm problem
can you please answer this question

This is interesting. I've been experiencing the same thing for about a week or two, where after hours my speed to JHB and anything international is just pathetic.

The funny thing is, this is on Vox and Vumatel. It's been going balls to walls for 7 months at 200/200, but recently it seems like there is a congestion issue or something.

I am also on the 100/100 package on Vumatel (Cape Town).

Seeing similar results to international servers including London (slow download but fast upload). It does however seem to be all over the show during evenings when using speedtest.net

Using dslreports.com to test speed gives similar results (and also all over the show, it can be fast during the 1st test but then dead slow when testing again a minute later).

This started last weekend (11th), before that speed test results where a lot more consistent and download significantly faster.

I have been running a jitter/ ping test since 6:30PM this evening up until a few minutes ago to about 25 international servers. All servers are pinged twice a second. While the lowest latency to London is good (144ms) the volatility is rather high (can go up to + 60ms), this is normally an indication of congestion or ISP issue

I will schedule the ping/jitter test again for 1am this morning to see if there is a difference

So is the common denominator vumatel then? Surely that can't have anything to do with it?

As a matter of interest, did the same jitter/ping test for the last 10 minutes using Vodacom LTE connection, Latency to the same server in London is 171ms but the volatility is a lot better (+22ms). It is not just the London server where the volatility is better on the LTE line, it is a lot better for the other 24 servers as well.

Hi Ronald

Please see the attached tests from this evening after 19:00 - as you can see it is still quite pathetic. Furthermore downloading via HTTP in the evenings yields speeds as low as 1Mbps, and attempts to perform operating system updates either time out or take 2 hours to download less than 1 GB.

Your argument that the speed test results are influenced by TCP window scaling is invalid because the same tests performed before 19:00 or to a local destination show significantly better results, and they run for the same period of time. Furthermore you claim that your test showing 250Mbps indicates that your network has sufficient capacity, however when you take the fact that you have a 1Gbps line into account this means that you are in actual fact only getting 25% of you total speed - yet you are claiming there is nothing wrong?

Can you please address our questions directly instead of constantly skirting around the issue? The bottom line is that I am not getting the service that I am paying for, and you need to rectify this immediately. Afrihost used the same stalling tactic by claiming there were no issues on their ADSL service, before eventually admitting that they were experiencing severe capacity issues several months down the line.

My experience with Rocketnet so far.

Vumatel (Britelink) installed my CPE into my house yesterday morning, but the yellow PON light was flashing which they indicated is normal and can take some time to change to steady lit. In the afternoon received my Rocketnet router, after the driver sent me a please call me when he arrived at the gate.

At around 17:00 I received a confirmation email from Vuma indicating I am now connected and they provided me with the FSAN nr. Yellow flashing light changed to solidly lit.

Phoned Rocketnet, provided them with this FSAN nr and shortly thereafter received the username and password for the router. Entered it and all good. Did a quick speed test via wifi and got good results on a 20/20 package as per attached. Will monitor it but so far so good.

Quick question, although its uncapped, is there any way we can see/track our data usage?
