Smithsonian channel for documentaries
NowhereTV (International section) for live Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN, NHK, Sky, eTV news channels etc.
Justin.tv for World Cup soccer
Why can't I find this channel? (I'm a Roku newbie)NowhereTV (International section) for live Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN, NHK, Sky, eTV news channels etc.
Thanks Yotch✌@Ronele: None of those are pay channels including the BBC iPlayer channels for which the UK residents pay a yearly licence fee. You won't be able to watch Hulu Plus, Smithsonian, History, A&E etc. from a UK Roku account but you should be able to access all of the international Netflix services (Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Sweden, US etc.) using a DNS service such as Unotelly etc.
Thanks Yotch✌
Do you have Netflix and Hulu Plus available? If not you will need to first unlink your Roku (via the Deactivate account link) from the current account and then delete the Roku account and create a new one. I would rather try to sign up for an 8-day free trial version of Unotelly and then load the Unotelly DNS addresses onto your router. It is possible that www.roku.com is not supported by SmartDNSProxy. Rather just use a commercial product to try to set up the account correctly and then you can change back to SmartDNSProxy to stream from Netflix etc. You should be given the option to load both Netflix and Hulu Plus while you are creating the US Roku account. If not, there is probably a problem with setting up the account and you may need to use a free VPN (www.tunnelbear.com) instead. I managed fine using Unotelly to create a US Roku account but not a UK one - I needed to use getukvpn for that. You will also need to do a factory reset of your Roku from the Settings menu on the Roku before you try to link it to the new account. If NF and H+ are available then you should be able to load the rest of the channels via the channel codes shown below.
Procedure - follow in order
Unlink your Roku from the current account using the Deactivate account link at www.roku.com
Delete the account using the Deactivate link at www.roku.com
Sign up for a free 8-day trial at www.unotelly.com
Load the Johannesburg and Cape Town DNS addresses into your router. Save the configuration.
Reboot your router as well as your PC.
Login to www.unotelly.com and check that both your IP address and DNS settings are correct. Look for green tick marks.
Do a Factory reset of the Roku from the Settings menu on the Home Page of the Roku device. Turn off the power to the Roku once it has finished booting - do not try to link it until you have set up a new account.
Use a browser to create a new account at www.roku.com using a fake US address. If all goes well and you are able to load Netflix and Hulu Plus then turn on your Roku and attach it to the new account using the code that appears on the TV screen.
Load the rest of the channels via their channel codes at www.roku.com (ae (A&E), crackle, H9DWC (NowhereTV), history, JUSTINTV, lifetime, lsfwf (Vevo), pandora, smithsonianchannel, 4od etc.). If you want the new channels to appear immediately do a Software update from the Settings menu on the Roku Homepage (otherwise should appear within 24 hours). This might force load the latest system software Release 5.4 Build 3340 which is currently being rolled out so hopefully this doesn't introduce any further problems. Can check software version by pressing [Home:3x] [Up:2x]on the remote ~1 sec intervals.
Post again if you are still having problems.
@Yotch Thanks I will give this a try and keep you updated.
@Yotch
Thanks it works perfectly, I unlinked the Roku and deactivated the account. Then setup the smartdnsproxy and that was it. Thanks for your help.
Now to upgrade my line, it's been very slow the last while and i only have a 2mb which isn't working when we stream NETFLIX from both the PS3 and Roku.
I ordered my Roku 3 from Amazon earlier in the week, holding thumbs that it will arrive before next weeks long weekend.
I currently have a UnoTelly subscription. Is there a reason to move to SmartDNSProxy?
