Roku 3 tips and discussions.

Will i be able to do it on another device? Like my PS 3 ?

I can't see why it won't work. I don't have a PS3 so I can only guide you in what to do and hopefully is wotks out fine. You must ensure that UnoTelly DNS servers are setup on your router before continuing.

  1. Clear/format the Roku app on PS3.
  2. Switch off PS3 and disconect from network to be sure.
  3. Connect to a UK vpn like UnoTelly on your PC.(You can apply for a 3 day trial at UnoTelly once)
  4. Create a Roku account. You will know it is a UK account because when you enter your address detail, United Kingdom would have been automatically selected as your country. If it says United States, then it will create a US account.
  5. Connect PS3 to network.
  6. Switch on PS3 and go into Roku app.
  7. Link the PS3 to your UK Roku account. At this point you will choose channels. There will be a price on the right hand side. If its in dollars, its a US account. If its in pounds...WHOOHOO

I think that the Roku only offers video on demand services and no longer live streaming but I could be wrong.

I saw Sky News had a live stream, and then a whole bunch of catch up news clips and stories

BBC iPlayer does seem to have live streaming, with 7 days catch up.

I installed the NowTV app last night, but haven't renewed my subscription yet. I will check this out it out tonight though. But this looks like only VOD content. Kind of how DSTV Catchup works.

UPDATE: NowTV does infact have live streaming as well.

I've only had the Roku for less than a day now, so over the long long weekend I will play around and see how the UK channels perform.

Yeah, it came with a one day sports pass valued at 10GBP. I use Apple TV for Netflix and Hulu+, just NEEDED this to get a stable and consistent 4OD, and it works like dream :)

Channel 4 is the best TV channel in the world imho so 15 quid is a complete bargain if only for that.

Have you tried the NowTV service? It works on my Roku but all I can get is SD. Netflix, BBC, Sky News are all pumping in HD so it's not my line.

PQ is excellent I reckon. The packaging for the Now TV says it's 720p and although I haven't checked specifically, I'd say I'm getting the same good picture quality watching 4od on the Now TV box that I get while watching Netflix or Hulu on my Apple TV.

Yes, I saw they said it was 720p. I also read that they also ping "home" at that dictates your bitrate. Doesn't help us much in SA because we get an average 200ms to UK.

Well, if you got nothing to do this weekend, you can get a free 30 trial of the Movie (not Entertainment as I previously stated) package of NowTV.

You only need to update your unotelly IP if you reboot your router. There is an app though if you don't wanna log in via your pc.

UnoTelly also supports dynamic DNS services which makes it real easy to keep your IP updated.
I setup my dyndns account on my router and my Unotelly account - and that's that.

What address did you use for so signing up with NowTV. Want to give it a bash, but keeps rejecting my address variations.

How are you planning to test, on a Roku?

Also, I made a mistake. There is a 30 day free Movie pass, not a 30 day free Entertainment pass.

Ye - on a Roku.
Just keen to compare the content vs Netflix / Hulu.

Thanks for the details dude. Appreciated! Account created.
Now got to wait for my wife's movie on Netflix to finish so I can mess about.

Are you running a UK Roku account then? If not, the NowTV app won't show unfortunately.

I created a UK account quick. Just reset one of my Roku's and linking the UK account now. Time to fiddle...

heheheh, the curiosity got the better of you I see. Good stuff, I'm keen to see how you NowTV channel performs for you. As I said previously, for me its only SD. But Netflix, BBC, 4oD, Sky News and a couple more were all HD.

I actualy watched some original Ali G Show on 4oD last night, that stuff is still *** funny :D

Does anyone here use an Afrihost 2mb line for streaming? what is their services like and do you get periods where you buffer whilst streaming.
I have a Roku 3 and when I am streaming at night i always get buffering to the point where it becomes unwatchable.

Current ISP is cybersmart.

I don't use Afrihost, but could you list what channels/services you are using on your Roku?

It happens on all of them:
Netflix
Hulu Plus
Crackle
History Channel
the lists goes on

I am also using Unotelly so my DNS is not slowing my speed down.

I'm on mweb and have no issues with netflix or crackle. I've got a uk Roku account so can't use hulu or history. But I get BBC and 4oF and they are also fine. The only issue I have is with NowTV, but I think it's an channel or server lead issue.

I also use UnoTelly, but it won't affect download speed.
