Roku 3 tips and discussions.

I'm on mweb and have no issues with netflix or crackle. I've got a uk Roku account so can't use hulu or history. But I get BBC and 4oF and they are also fine. The only issue I have is with NowTV, but I think it's an channel or server lead issue.

I also use UnoTelly, but it won't affect download speed.

Cybersmart reset my account and line and it's actually looking good tonight. Let's hope it lasts. Thanks AdrianH

Got myself 2 Roku's to set up in the house but I have a question about the plugs and power for the devices. Can I get a US to SA plug converter and run them on that taking into consideration the voltage difference between SA (220v) and the US (110v)?

Will it affect them if I go with this route or can they handle the difference?

I have read reports that the older Roku's have power adapters that say 110 volts, but in fact the adapters are 110 - 220 volt.

You can read on the Roku forum here

Just a heads up - I started that post on the Roku forum. Still have my original Roku3 and original power supply that it shipped with. Still working till this day!! As stated in the post I did run it on the bench for a while without load before taking the plunge. . . ;)

They are both brand new Roku 3's still in boxes and everything. Will take the chance and run them on the adapters and see how it goes.

Been running my 3 with the adapter for about 6 months now. Works perfect.

Got 3 Roku 2 XS's and 2 Roku 3's. Out the box and into the wall socket. No probs.

My two favourite things (that aren't edible) that I've purchased in the last 12 months is my Macbook Air and the Roku 3. I use both of them all the time and they just work!

Apart from the remote is there a big difference between the roku 3 and the roku 1?

  • Roku 3 only has HDMI out ONLY. Other Roku's have RCA as well for non-hd.
  • Roku 3 has ethernet as well as wifi. Other Roku's are only wifi
  • Roku 3 is snappier as it has faster processor than it's predecessors

Personally I would rather choose an Amazon Fire TV over any of the Roku models. Many of the Rokus use the same Broadcom BCM2835 processor that is in the Raspberry Pi. The Roku 3 has a dual core BCM11130 which is faster but nowhere near as capable as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8064 with Adreno 320 graphics processor in the Fire TV. The Fire TV runs android which has a huge software base unlike the Roku where each channel has to be developed using their own custom software. The range of high quality free content should be much better than on the Roku (XBMC vs niche content etc.). Some Hulu content will also be available free of charge on mobile devices later this year which will presumably include most android devices.

Ignoring the different system software, the picture quality on a Roku 1 should be identical to that on a NowTV or a Roku 3. The UI is apparently much quicker on the Roku 3 though. If you are on a tight budget a refurbished LT or HD sells for between $35~$40 on Amazon.

The Roku 3 does have Dolby Digital via HDMI and Amazon does deliver outside the US.

Roku 2 XS has ethernet and wifi. Reason I went for those before the 3 came out. I don't do video over wifi.
