Roku 3 tips and discussions.

Experiencing Roku error code 001 tonight.

Initially neither Netflix nor Hulu+ could connect, so I did a factory reset (usually e quickest solution even if it it a drag to load all the channels again). After pairing the remote I can't proceed as "there is a problem connecting to the Roku server" etc.

The ADSL seems to work well as I'm using it on the tablets & phones etc as usual tonight. I don't think it is a region error (Unotelly) cause Roku should still connect and allow me to watch youtube?

Any suggestions?

Ok, so I have given up on the whole DD+ to DD conversion. I decided to get one of these bad boys to replace my 10 year old Yamaha RX-V440.

Yamaha RX-V475

Amazon have reduced the prices as Yamaha have just released the newer 377/477/577/677 models to replace the 375/475/575/675 models.

Super excited now...

Just a follow up on my purchase of the Yamaha RX-V475 from Amazon.com. Its an awesome piece of kit but....

  1. It is a US speced model which means you get some internet enabled apps like Pandora and Spotify. Also has support for internet radio stations but haven't given it a go yet.
  2. The voltage is set to 110v and no voltage selector exists. I did some reading up before I purchased and some said there was a switch inside the back plate if you remove the cover. Mine didn't so I had to get a voltage converter to drop from 220v to 110v. This was R550 at Mica for 500W which is ample as amp only peaks at 280 watts.
  3. The radio tuning frequency stepping is set to US (the frequency must end in odd number after decimal) and there is no way to change this. Europe and Asian model have the functionality to change it within the menu's, but the menu doesn't exist in in the US model. I enquired to both Yamaha Europe and Yamaha South Africa asking if I could install the Europe firmware to solve the tuning issue. It turns out you can install another regions firmware, but it won't solve my issue as the tuner hardware in the US model is different to the Europe and Asia models, and the actual PCB is set for a particular region on manufacture and can't be changed with firmware upgrade. SO updating firmware will make no difference.

So if you are willing to live with a slight buzz/hum of a voltage converter and only odd frequency radio stations like 94.7 <-- see the odd number, then buying from Amazon isn't so bad for the +-35% saving you could get.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to do a bit more research before purchasing my AVR.

I'm using Unotelly with my Roku3. Few days ago Netflix started complaining that it is not available in my region. Hulu+ works well though so I don't think the problem lies with the settings on the router. When I view the network properties on Roku, Netflix sees me as being from SA/EN (language) and Roku itself shows my IP as 10.0.0.8.

Advice appreciated.

In Netflix, what dns servers are listed? There should be three of them with 8.8.8.8 as the last one.

Also, ensure that your public ip is updated at UnoTelly.

Thanks Adrian. My DNS servers are 10.0.02 and 8.8.8.8 so it seemed it was resolved by getting new Unotelly info and putting it in the router.

Thanks for the advice

I created a UK account and got BBC iplayer, now tv, bbc sport and itv player...

here's the thing... everything works except for itv... i can stream live WC soccer on bbc sport, watch bbc iplayer, but itv when i want to watch something, it plays the ads, but when its time for the video to start, it says the video cannot be played...

any ideas whats wrong?

Are you using unotelly or another service?

EDIT - if you are using unotelly check out http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/624553-ITV-on-Roku-and-NowTV and make sure to post in the thread mentioned.

Just unboxed and set up my second Roku 3. Immediately noticed that the blue directional button is sticky after pressing up or down. Anyone know the procedure with Amazon with regards to an out of box issue? It's quite an irritating issue considering my first one is rock solid.

Mmmm, my Roku has gone slightly crazy :-(

It didn't want to connect is evening to Netflix or Hulu+, so first hing I checked the DNS on the router. It was still correct as I checked it last night (post elsewhere). Updated it in many case.

This is where the fun starts. I did a factory reset of Roku so that it will load all the channels etc. Problem is that it goes into "loops". Either it doesn't pair with the remote and just goes onto the screen where I choose USA and time zones and then back to the pairing screen ad infinitum OR I get it where it gives me the code to type into Roku/link on the web, but as soon as I type the screen goes black and it starts up again, gives me a new code, I type,MIT goes black etc. On the iPad where I type the code it says all is fine, happy streaming!!

Sigh ... Think I need to unplug it until tomorrow ...

In the meantime you can try to control it from a tablet, smartphone etc. from www.remoku.tv or download the Roku app. Amazon is usually very good about returns. I think you just have to e-mail them and let them decide what to do.

My Kindle packed up about 2 years ago. If I remember correctly, I actually went onto the website and somewhere there is an option to return. They then sent me an email where you can download and print a UPS (I think) waybill ticket which you stick to a box I sent the Kindle back in. I then dropped it off at UPS in Isando and it was sent back to them at Amazon's cost. But the good thing is that Amazon shipped me the new Kindle even before I had shipped the broken one back. They are a good company.

I have emailed Amazon as this is what I am after - I don't want to wait for my item to ship back and then wait for a new item to ship here. I am hoping they will send a replacement and then allow me to send the faulty one back.

Where did you get your Roku from?
I thought the US version came get the UK apps.

^^^

what Mike said... i just created a UK account and linked my roku to it, then got all the apps..

anyone here streaming WC through BBC sport? i noticed they dont show the early games, like the 6pm games, yesterday they ddnt show the Netherlands vs Australia game, but they had the game build up... time for kickoff... they show live tennis!!

Also, i have to use my capped account to stream, i normally use my fnb connect uncapped 4mb to stream everything else, but on bbc, i have to use my afrihost capped otherwise it just buffers all the time

.........
They are a good company.

Good? Bloody excellent! I emailed them before bed last night. When I woke up I had an email saying they are very sorry and they have created a new order and will be shipping a replacement device and remote to me. When I get it I just ship the faulty one back.

That is incredible trust and service from a company - they have no way of knowing that I will indeed return the faulty one and they could lose out! I am mighty impressed with this service from them :)

The apps depend on the region you register your Roku account against.
Serious? I really thought that couldn't be done.
So what's the difference between US and UK? Because the Netflix region you can just change on your SmartDNS right? So even on a UK Roku you can watch US Netflix.

That's a good question. I was under the impression that the EU Rokus had slightly different firmware from the US ones as apparently the Universal Search feature does not work on the EU version but I think it might if connected to a US account. If this is the case then the only difference would presumably be the 220~240V power adapter. The main attraction of the US service is Hulu Plus which is not available on the UK service. The UK service probably has better free options such as BBC iPlayer, 4oD and ITV. Some of the UK services such as 4oD do not appear to work on all the Roku models such as my Roku HD 2500X and the LT 2450X which were never sold in the UK. All of the latest models now appear to be available in the UK.
