Roku 3 tips and discussions.

Confirmed. You can switch a US Roku 3 to a UK one. Needed a VPN though for the account setup and registering the Roku to that email.

I'd still like to know if anybody with a UK Roku is able to access the Universal Search feature from a US Roku account.

So what's the difference between US and UK? Because the Netflix region you can just change on your SmartDNS right? So even on a UK Roku you can watch US Netflix.

Yes, I watch Netflix US with my Roku UK account.

The difference between US and UK Roku accounts are purely which channels are available in the channel store for download. Also, the universal search is not enabled for UK accounts.

Does the universal search work from one of the UK EU Roku models if it is linked to a US Roku account though. I assume that it does or is this feature permanently disabled in the UK models?

Hi Guys, need some help. I have just received my Roku 3 from Amazon. Going to try and set up tonight. Would like to set up a UK account, do I need to use a UK address and will my SA credit card work. I already have an Unotelly account and have Netflix and Hulu Plus set up on my PS4.

I used getukvpn (free) to set up a UK Roku account using a fake UK address which I took from a Stratford-Upon-Avon tourist website! You do need to use a VPN though, I was unable to do it successfully using just a DNS Proxy service such as Unotelly.

Thanks. Unotelly has a free 3 day VPN trial, so I will use that. Do I need to enter in credit card details during the Roku account setup. Will my SA card work or should I look into getting a virtual credit card like Entropay.

Just try your SA credit card. It will tell you if there is a problem with the card.

my roku 3 is set up for the uk so i have bbc, itv, now tv, channel 4 etc. If i want hulu +, would i need to register the roku with a different email adress as an American one and then do a hard reset and log in again each time i want to Hulu +?

Yes, and you will need to enter all your account details again after each factory reset. If you have purchased any softwre from the Channel Store I think you will lose it unless there is some way to transfer it to the SD card that I'm not aware of.

If the combination of those channels are really that important then it would make sense to go with an Android box like the DROID TV where you can access both UK and US apps via a little bit of trickery.

I agree. The DroidTV can access much more high quality content than a Roku. I have been testing out Show Box this evening and have been very impressed so far. You can also access practically anything you want via XBMC and the very latest content via the android apps from the large US networks like ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.

A £10 (rebranded Roku) NowTV box would be a less expensive option for your UK content. Then you could set your Roku for the US content. Only problem would be the remote as it would control both devices so you'd want to use a wifi remote app.

Only noticed it now but there is a firmware 5.5 update out for the Roku 3 and Roku Streaming Stick. Makes a huge difference to the long start-up time of Netflix. 2-3 Seconds versus 25-30 seconds before the update for the Roku Streaming Stick. I am a very happy camper.

Where do you get these?

I think that you will need to get a UK resident to purchase one for you online for 10GBP from the NowTV online shop and then mail it to you. There are a few sellers on Amazon UK but they charge more than 10GBP. You still need to pay shipping and any other local VAT charges once it arrives in SA.

Personally I would rather look at the DroidTV which is available locally from AVSupply for R1200. It does cost a lot more but you can watch much more high quality content. It's not really cost effective to order single unit quantities from Amazon etc. as the shipping and VAT charges can become significant.

I order a Roku 3 from Amazon a couple of weeks ago and came in at just under R1300, including shipping and taxes.

@oomjan: With the current exchange rate at nearly R11 to the US$, you must have bought the Roku 3 when it was selling for around $80?
